It was a fun gun to shoot! When the sun was right, you could see it flash off the projectile...

Not “far further” rather “much farther” is the correct usage.

Good ol’ Thumper! Love that weapon. Really love his bad ass big brother, the MK19.

If I had a Grenade Launcher, some son-of-a-bitch would die.

It was a neat weapon but had some significant disadvantages. To aim it, you had to stick your upper body out of cover for what seemed like a lifetime when people were shooting at you. The round took a while to get there, so if you needed to watch where it went, you had to stay exposed even more seconds.

And the 40mm grenade itself is very small - has to fit within its outside shell and is a little spherical thing - and the fragments are really, really small.

Better than the M203 that followed, in that it actually reloaded faster and wasn't a clunky, angular brush-catching mess like the M16/M203 combination. The M79 was a light, handy and reliable little beast and when nobody was employing automatic weapons in your direction, fun to fire.

After getting rid of a worn out POS M16, I started carrying a duper. Since we were in triple canopy jungle most of the time, I walked 2nd in formation, the duper loaded with a shotgun shell round. It was quick to load with a grenade round if needed. It always worked, and it was devastating when the grenade round directly hit an enemy. I loved my M79.

Carried a Colt M16A1 in Vietnam. Same theory with dual use with the 203. 20 round capacity plus a little more fire power. The newer ones have 30. They actually replaced the M14’s in the late 60’s. A little heavy with the ammo, but came in handy a few times.
