My wife is Chinese and uses that word a LOT when she is talking to her sister in China on the phone. I have always told her to be careful when speaking Chinese in public just because of that word.

Several years ago I was walking with my wife and her family. My wife was saying in Mandarin something like “no no daddy you take that one , daddy take highway880, that one , daddy highway 880.
In Mandarin, 8 is ‘ bah’. Daddy is ‘bahbah’. ‘that one’s is ‘nigah’.
So it sounded like ‘ching ching chong chong bah bah bah bah nigger ching ching chong Chiang bahhh bahh nigger nigger bah bah’
They happened to be walking past a group of black people at the time.
There could have been real trouble, and my wife’s family was completely oblivious.

is the school upset at a seemingly racist word in the Chinese culture, or that Chinese language is mentioned? Will they now issue a directive that Chinese students can’t use the word?
The scary thing is that the intent of the communication is irrelevant, it is purely how the listener chooses to perceive it. We NEED that pendulum to swing back.
