He died at age 89.
The dates are for the camp system and part of the book title— not AS birth and death. I read all of it unabridged in the 70s when it first came out.
He was a little older than 38. (11 December 1918 – 3 August 2008)

You are misunderstanding the time span "1918-1956." It refers to the length of time that the GULAG existed - not to Solzhenitzsyn's life span.
