It should act as a constant reminder of the limitations of Congressional power. . . . . It is the dishonest politicians that we hope would benefit from frequent recitals of their allegiance "to the Republic", meaning that Republic established by the Constitutiton.

Point taken, but would the Pledge really help? Instead, before each meeting, maybe they should recite:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
