Response: I wonder if it’s not a misreading of their response to femininity. Rather then interpreting or understanding that their attraction is really a sexual response to the opposite sex, which as a child is interpreted as wanting to be what your natural instincts actually desire to have.

Makes perfect sense. When these men were young, they might've confused what they find attractive with what they themselves are. Apparently they find women attractive, as they themselves try to emulate how they see women as dressing and behaving. Of course, in reality, most real women do not dress and behave the extreme, cartoonish way that many of these men do. Most women like to look nice, but we don't have an obsessive "need" to dress up.
