It should probably start with an “A”.

Probably none of us have any of those.

Owned them all except Ruger Mini.
What did I keep beside the bed? Saiga 12.

Ruger PC-9 carbine. Fires 9mm handgun ammo and takes a glock mag. It is a break down carbine. Rear sight is way down the barrel so it is easy to sight for people who need glasses. 35 inches long so it is very easy to manuever. And the best part, it’s black so it makes it scary looking.

If the Ruger 10/22 was "designed to mimic the size and weight of the historic M1 Carbine," then get an M1 Carbine.
Rather than the PTR-91, get an M1A. More options.
I think an AR-15 with a pinned flash 14.5 inch barrel is best. YMMV.

The Ruger 10/22 is nice but has one shortcoming; the bolt doesn't lock back when the magazine is empty. Was that a hangfire or are you out of ammo?
On a related note, the 10/22 sights are okay but you can also buy AR styled front and rear sights that they use with the Project Appleseed history / marksmanship training.

Why go for the 10/22. "Designed to mimic the size and weight of the historic M1 Carbine..." when you could just go for the M1 Carbine?
With Underwood Extreme Cavitator ammo you've got a highly lethal round (much more so than a .22LR), without the same overpenetration worries you have with a 5.56 mm.

How about a magazine-fed tactical shotgun?

I am thinking a short 12ga may be best. Maybe a Taurus Jude loaded with .410 personal defense backup.

I would like to have an M1 Carbine that shoots .30-06 cartridges. Later models did shoot the same ammo as M1 Garand and the Springfield 1903A3? Is this correct?

Before this article I’ve never heard of the PTR-91 but I like what I read about it. And there’s a California version of it as well. Thanks.

While these threads are always entertaining, it’s probably best right not not to list your inventory of firearms and ammo...

I think an AR15 pistol would be an ideal home defense weapon, especially when fitted with a quality red dot and light. Handy, maneuverable, lightweight, and with plenty of stopping power.

The best one is the one you have or can get ammo for....nothing more useless than a weapon with no ammunition.
