What is the benefit of a laser weapon. It is a line of sight weapon I believe. How does that make it better over a missile with onboard targeting equipment??

With a laser, you can destroy an incoming missile.

If these laser weapons can be fired and moved at high speeds and fired repeatedly withing seconds of firing and take out missiles at hyper sonic speeds they are game changers for surface warfare vessels. A carrier battle group could slug it out for a while if these things can take out the Vampires quickly and at a reasonable distance. They would also free up magazines for offensive missiles instead of SAMS.
