1606: Guy Fawkes and other Gunpowder Plot conspirators

On this date in 1606, Guy Fawkes, “the only man to ever enter parliament with honorable intentions,” was hanged, drawn and quartered in London with three conspirators for attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament … and the government with it.

Fawkes, a soldier, was part of the Gunpowder Plot, a Catholic attempt to assassinate the new king James I when it became clear the House of Stuart would continue its Tudor predecessors’ intolerance of the Roman church.

The conspiracy was crowded, so it was something of a miracle the secret kept for over a year while the plotters filled a rented room under the House of Lords with 36 barrels of gunpowder and waited for parliament to open. The explosion would have slain not only James, but numerous officials of the government; the conspirators’ “then what?” plan seems a little vague, but with a modern recreation confirming that the gunpowder packed under Westminster was sufficient to blow the place to smithereens, it’s safe to say something dramatic would have ensued. That “something” might easily have been a savage crackdown against Catholics....

1606: Guy Fawkes and other Gunpowder Plot conspirators

Everybody walking around the "Capitol" in DC today should wear a Guy Fawkes Mask and watch the Rat's heads explode.

Then tell 'em it's because of the Chinese Wuhan Flu ...

Is this the right day? At the time, they were still using the Julian calendar which was 11 days behind the Gregorian calendar that we use today.

A commenter at the site wrote “The Gunpowder Plot: Terror and Faith in 1605 by Antonia Fraser goes into it in great detail, with the investigation showing Fawkes may well have been an agent provocateur.”

So it was Jan. 6 at the Capitol but no gunpowder barrels in the basement.

Guy Fawkes Day in England is Early November, I think. I guess that was the day the plot was foiled!

“ Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d (or by God’s mercy*)
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holla boys, Holla boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
And what should we do with him?
Burn him!”

James I & VI, of the KJV Bible fame, is so interesting in the knot that he ties in British & World History. He is the Protestant son of the very Roman Catholic (RC) Queen Mary of Scotland. Queen Mary, who was raised in RC France and was, when married to Francis II, (she 15, he 14) Queen of France for a year plus, but was monarch of Scotland since 9 months. After Francis II’s death in 1560, she returned to a very unfamiliar Scotland and, within 4 years, married her half cousin, C on 29 July, 1565. their son, James, was born on 19 June 1566 and was recognized as the heir to the Scotland Monarchy as James (Stuart) VI.

Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, was g.grandson of England’s Henry VII, and thus, if Protestant, a potential candidate to the English Throne of Elizabeth I, as was Mary except for her espoused RC beliefs. Despite their child, James, Henry quickly became estranged from Mary and even plotted with adherents to set her aside for her RC adherence and make himself sole monarch of Scotland.

On 9 March 1566, when Mary was heavily pregnant with their child, James, Henry Stuart, and his friends, assassinated her personal secretary, David Rizzio, as a move to deprive her of support. There were also rumors that Henry & David were lovers and the killing was to sniffle that story. Eleven months later, on 9 February 1567, Henry Stuart and his body servant, were found dead outside their exploded residence. He and his servant were apparently smothered to death rather than killed by the explosion. Suspicion was cast on several Protestant Scottish Nobles who distrusted Stuart’s ambitions for the throne.

However, Mary brought her own trouble with her quick 3rd marriage to one of the probable assassins, James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, just 3 months later. Within 2 months, ‘Mary, Queen of Scotts’ was forced to abdicate in favor of her infant son on 24 July 1567. Neither ever saw the other again after 23 April 1567 as Mary was soon forced to flee Scotland to her cousin Elizabeth’s England following a failed armed attempt against her half-brother and her son’s regent, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray.

James became King James VI of Scotland on 24 July 1567, age 13 months. Nineteen years later, his mother Mary, was executed by Elizabeth’s government, as an active participant in organized RC Treason against Protestant Elizabeth. James VI, raised as Protestant, became the obvious heir to Elizabeth and did succeed her to the English Throne on 25 July 1603 at age 37. At his succession, he had 2 sons by his wife, Anne of Denmark, Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Charles. When Henry Frederick died at 18 of typhoid, Charles succeeded James as King Charles I on 27 March 1625.

Charles I and his 2 heirs, older son Charles II and younger son James II, all shared an imperious attitude, marriage to observant RC Queens and deep suspicion by their subjects of being practicing Roman Catholics themselves. Following a bloody Civil War, a regicide of Charles I, a monarchy restoration of Charles II and a three year disaster of James II, the Stuart male line finished with the Coup d’erat of the English Parliament and Army in 23 December 1688 (The Glorious Revolution) forcing James to abdicate and exile in favor of his Protestant Daughter Mary AND her equally Protestant co-Monarch, William of Orange, sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic.

Childless, they reigned from 1689 to [William] 1702 and were then followed by Mary’s sister, Queen Anne who reigned from 1702 to 1714 when, also without surviving offspring, the Stuart House ended and the House of Hanover took the British Throne with George I.

“V for Vendetta” - good movie...and it may become more real here than we ever believed possible (at least I hope that the reaction to our impending dictatorship does).
