CNN’s Editor-at-Large Chris Cillizza was so obsessed with former President Donald Trump that he tried to blame him for an unrelated GameStop stock short squeeze caused by Reddit users.
CNN’s never-ending fixation on Trump actually made him look good this time.
Cillizza published an absurd story headlined, “How Trumpism explains the GameStop stock surge.” Cillizza bleated: “At the core of Donald Trump's angry populist appeal was -- and is -- this sentiment: The elites think they know better than you. They think they can tell you how to live and what to believe. But guess what? We the people are smarter than the elites!”
Cillizza’s — perhaps unintended — argument seems to be: Trumpism is so bad it taught the serfs that they could actually be rockstars too and “stick it to the elites,” as he put it.

Anyone who has been watching our political elite in action knows very well that the political elite is not nearly as smart as they think they are. I mean: Hank Johnson thinks islands can tip over.
Are the business elite that much smarter? Anyone who has worked in a corporate structure knows that the business elite are also not as smart as they think they are.
I don’t means this as a Dark Conspiracy Theory — but the world is run by a network of people who bully weak folks and slap the backs of the right people and who help each other get rich because they are all insiders who understand how the game is played. Hillary Clinton is a bully. Hunter Biden is a backslapper. These people run the world.
The people at the top are very likely to be sociopaths. Some of them are smart. But not most of them.
Glenn Greenwald has a great video explaining what this stuff really means:
Cry me a river. Sob sob sob.
They have really pumped up the rhetoric to stop people investing. They have talking heads calling them “Nazis” and “white supremacists”. Been the narrative since yesterday.
Yes Chris. Trump is still pulling the strings.
Mwa-hahahaha!
He isn’t a man. He is an idea that lives on.
Cillizza is probably right on one level. The same dynamics that account for Trump’s popularity are at play in this recent stock caper, even if some of the people involved don’t realize it. This certainly looks like a peasant revolt within the stock world.
It’s a little like Van Jones and his “white-lash” comment. There was a lot of truth in that, but he and the rest of the Left utterly missed what it implied.
The left will defend the hedge funds, actually all of DC will.
When do you think the old Libs are going to see that the very same people, they’ve been fighting their whole life, are now their “leaders”.
It’s a strange bedfellows moment.
AOC and Cruz both hammered the brokers who tried to stop the reddit crowd from investing today.
There’s a subtle thing going on. AOC is out of NY. But the hedge funds, though associated with Wall Street, are largely in Connecticut. So having them smashed doesn’t really touch NY tax revs.
The parallel is strong, right down to the establishment engaging in massive fraud to bring down those who dared stand up to them. Credible reports of Robinhood selling individual investors’ stocks on its own initiative against the will of small investors and at unreasonably low prices, and credible reports of massive vote fraud suggest that Sonny Curtis (1960) and The Clash (1980) had it right all along:
Breakin’ rocks in the hot sun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won
I needed money ‘cause I had none
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won
As long as insiders are in the game, they will lie, cheat, steal, or kill to keep normal, decent people down.
This certainly looks like a peasant revolt within the stock world.
The problem with that is that reddit got rid of the Great Awakening & The Donald groups. They be lefties.
