When McConnell says he wants Trump gone, what he means politically neutered. If 67 Senators vote to convict, then just 51 are required to vote to forbid Trump from ever holding office again. That is the goal.
Will they get an extra 16 Republicans to vote to convict? I read where the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach in the House collectively received 170 million dollars in donations. That’s seventeen million for each yes vote in the House. Call it 20 million to buy off each Senator. but, many of them might be bought with a promise of a bridge or airport named after them. Are they that crass? Uhm...probably. Now, at least four “Republicans” would do it for nothing. So, we’re down to 12.
Having said that, I wonder if the Democrats have thought this through. Firstly, they are giving Trump a stage and he’s a showman. He may wipe the floor with them. Also, this is going to tie up the Biden administration, both by stealing the limelight and by preventing the Senate from taking up legislation. I also believe the political elites have misread the electorate. By doing this, they may create an unbeatable monster who will eat them all alive in the next two election cycles.
