The guardsmen by having their backs to the president means that they were ordered to look toward the crowd and to expect something to happen by it, rather than to expect the crowd to be peaceful and face toward the president.
Didn't look like it. They were at ease, and standing side by side along the concrete barriers along the street curb. I hope they don't get in trouble. If I was there, and in charge of them, and the shit rolled down hill to me, I would have just said that I had ordered them to keep anyone from trying to get over the barriers. Can't do that if you're facing the street.
One problem...there was no crowd. Nobody. Not even a pigeon or a squirrel.

No. They were faced in various directions. Many would be looking outward from the route to see any external threats.

Crowd or no crowd, they were probably told to face away, because there could be a threat from person or persons in the distance. Something I remember from when we did riot control training when I was in the Army in the early 1970s.
I just looked at the video again. The first group appears to be at attention. The second group has their back to the street. And what I thought were concrete barriers, were actually the metal ribbed kind.

They instruct other security personnel along the route to look outward where threats may be found. This is true for the police when there is a motorcade in any city in America.
Also, one has to watch out for rabid squirrels attacking or defecating pigeons flying over his car.

I would normally say they need to look away from the motorcade to be alert for threats. However there were differences in how groups of NG faced. Some groups looked away and some looked at the car.
Could be nothing but differences in how they were ordered to face ... or perhaps red state NG were ones looking away.
Probably much ado about nothing.
Yes the national guard were making sure no squirrels from the mall attacked the old coot.
