As a disclaimer, fans of 19th century British literature tend to be broken up into camps. One is the Janeites; fans of all things Jane Austen and genteel. The other is the Charlottans, in reference to Charlotte Bronte; fans of passionate romance and the Gothic. I am in in the 2nd camp. Another disclaimer is I have not read the novel.
This is my 3rd adaptation of the Jane Austen story. I have seen the 1996 version with Kate Beckinsale before she made her name spraying on latex all over body and playing a vampire. The other is the 2009 version with Romola Garai. I have never seen the version with Gwyneth Paltrow because I cannot stand her.
This version really plays up the comedic elements to the max. The video clip I link to gives you an idea of the tone of this version. There are these hilarious scenes of Miss Woodhouse being the Queen Bee of Highbury. When Emma meets the girls attending the boarding school, all wearing identical uniforms, they gravitate to her thinking her the Platonic ideal of being a gentlewoman.
My wife and daughter commented on the beautiful pastoral setting. Miss Woodhouse’s costumes are the height of class and taste.
I did notice Rupert Graves as Mr. Weston and Bill Nighy as Mr. Woodhouse.
Anya Taylor-Joy is making a name for herself with this role followed up by the praise for “Queen’s Gambit”.
Overall, this was unique take on this story.
One a scale of 1 to 5 bonnets, I give this 4 bonnets.
I prefer the version with Romola Garai.
And they pull my story about The Great Capitol Hill Chicken Chase.
I saw it and I couldn’t tell you much about it. That’s how memorable it was. I think there was a scene where a man was trying to get dressed and it was so difficult he needed help. Downton Abbey it wasn’t.
I adored this movie, best thing I saw in 2020, great soundtrack.
Same, double same
You should watch the version with Gwyneth Paltrow because it is good entertainment. Gwyneth does a decent job and all the other actors are very good. The actor who plays Mr. Woodhouse is particularly amusing and Juliet Stevenson as Mrs. Elton is great.
No fan Gwyneth Paltrow, so I avoid her movies.
