So, if I cast my vote on Nov. 3 at 6:55 p.m. and the polls close at 7:00 p.m. but they’re not through counting the votes by midnight, my vote gets thrown out?

Can your vote cast on Nov 3 at 6:55pm be counted on Dec 3rd?
If not, why not?

If the polls opened at 7:00 a.m. on November 3 then the end of the election day would be 6:59 a.m. on November 4. It is the responsibility of the election officials to devote sufficient resources to complete the task within the allocated time. Failure to meet the deadline does not mean the state does not participate in the election, it only means that the state legislature determines how the electors are chosen.
