Increased stimulus checks remain in limbo in the Senate, where lawmakers are gathering Wednesday to begin the process of overriding President Trump’s veto of a critical defense bill.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday blocked quick consideration of a House-passed bill to boost a new round of checks from $600 to $2,000 per individual.
Instead, he proposed a measure that would combine the House bill with provisions Trump has been seeking to repeal a Big Tech lawsuit liability shield and to create a commission to study the integrity of federal elections.
Democrats consider the additional provisions “poison pills” and will not back this bundled legislation, so it’s not expected to pass this week or by the end of the 116th Congress, which expires at 11:59 a.m. on Jan. 3.

“create a commission to study the integrity of federal elections.”
I haven’t laughed this hard in awhile.
Seems like McConnell has taken a losing position (as usual). Why would a Democrat vote to rein in Big-tech or investigate vote fraud when the only thing that happens is Republicans getting the blame for holding up the $2000 checks?
Trump should have vetoed the $600 bill and insisted on a $2000 bill with no or little pork.
They threw away a position that would have had widespread support for one that has little support. Sigh.
The 600 is on the way though.
If you hurt yourself laughing just be thankful for the new Socialist health plans being readied with "Medicare for all" which actually means for none as it goes broke in about three months.
By the way, that commission on elections would be like the one Gerald Ford co-chaired with Jimmy Carter in 2001 on Federal Election Reform.
Or the earlier one which concluded Oswald was the sole killer of JFK and acted totally alone, and the CIA and DC insiders like Lyndon B. Johnson were completely innocent of any involvement.
New commission will conclude "our nation's election system has a tiny amount of understandable human error and small glitches but as a whole is one with admirable integrity and honesty. We can depend upon the fact every voter's choice was counted honestly."
Yeah, some FReepers have reported receiving theirs already. Will the new checks be $2000 or $2000-600?
Pretty sure it will be 1400.
Forget the checks. It’s not as if Uncle Sam is reaching into his pocket, he’s taking it out of ours! END THE LOCKDOWN BULLSHIT AND OPEN UP THE DAMNED ECONOMY!!!
