Will We Continue To Ignore History?

People who fail to heed the past, doom the future. Likewise, those who ignore the present, as if they have no responsibility for their actions to those who come after, may change the course of history. That history may be one not wanted, or deserved, by those who inherit it.

An event in 9 A.D., in a dark German forest, probably didn’t seem like much on the global scale. When three Roman legions were destroyed by German tribes in Teutoburg Forest, it was a tragedy for sure. Nearly 20,000 were dead, an amount hard to imagine killed in only a few hours time. The loss struck Caesar Augustus hard, and no full-scale attempt to conquer and Romanize Germania would ever occur again. Rome would stay close to the militarized border along the Rhine and Danube Rivers for the remainder of its existence. As Rome endured for a few more hundred years after the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, the disaster didn’t seem like an event of significance, one that had altered history.

But it had.

Had the German region become part of Rome like western Europe, would the “barbarian” invasions of Rome centuries later never occur? Would the empire have endured longer? Would later wars between France and Germany also fail to materialize? What of the World Wars?

People who fail to heed the past, doom the future.

That old truism is a little bit misleading.

It is great that history is taught but the idea that the masses will ever be steeped deeply enough in the lessons of history is extremely and overly ambitious.

It is leaders who need to know the lessons of history and then need to sell important and applicable lessons to a population.

That's the way things work.

The fact that we have an ideologically corrupt media makes it impossible even for knowledgeable leaders to get historically important messages out if such messages run contrary to the ideology of that media.

I don’t think they teach history in school anymore.
No room left after they shoehorn in all the socialist propaganda.

You are correct. What is taught is "feelings" about how "terrible" the USA has been in the past, including things like slavery, the American Indian wars, the great depression, world wars, etc.
It is NOT about facts, figures, names, places, it's all about "feelings" now. It's about how terrible the USA has been in the past, and how you (the student) should "feel" about such actions.

This essay is filled with vague aphorisms and trite cliches.

How are we supposed to use a battle lost by the Romans to decide what to do with the election fraud? Should Trump have sent troops into the swing states to run the election?

The author talks about us degenerating into "tribalism", but is that our fault? We conservatives want a united front against liberalism. Instead we get an amalgam of libertarians, neocons, GOPe, Conservatism Inc., open border Chamber of Communism types, etc.

The left is unified against us. The conservatives used to be unified against the commies. Why can't conservatives unite against the progressives?

It is the GOPe and Conservatism, Inc. that need to clean up their acts and go 100% against ALL immigration and 100% for purple-fingered elections. Until and unless they do conservatism will remain a bunch of warring tribes.
