Also consider North and South, Wives and Daughters, and Cranford if you’re really into wholesome period drama. Avoid Jude the Obscure, though. Incredibly depressing.

I have watched two out of the three the exception being Wives and Daughters. I have read Jude the Obscure. It is one of the most depressing and bizzare novels I have ever read. Thomas Hardy really went over the precipice. The massive negative reaction to that work ended Hardy’s career as a novelist.
