The family and I watched this movie on Christmas Eve night based on a book "The Man Who Invented Christmas" released in 2017 via Amazon Prime. It is the story of how Charles Dickens saved his career as a novelist by writing "A Christmas Carol". As with a Dickens novel, one experiences the whole range of emotions from joy to sadness. The movie goes into detail about the personal demons Dickens was suffering from when his father went into debtors prison and Dickens was forced to work in a boot blackening factory at the age of 12. How this experienced resulted in a strained relationship with his father. I most enjoyed when he would run into William Makepeace Thackeray at a gentleman's club and Mr. Thackeray would needle him about his career as a writer is going. Also, any Dickens fan would have a big smile on his face as Dickens would collect names from real people he met and use in his future works. Some of the most satisfying moments is when Dickens would have conversations with his alter-ego Scrooge played by Christopher Plummer. The family and I enjoyed this very much and it is a wonderful alternative to say watching some of the other Christmas movies. I will give this four bonnets out of my scale of 1 to 5 bonnets.
Love Dickens. One of the few writers who can still be enjoyed by any age (including children).
Bit of a Dickens binge at the home. I am re-reading “Great Expectations” and the family is watching the BBC adaptation of Little Dorrit via Amazon Prime. My wife and daughter are hooked.
Merry Christmas.
Is that the one where the characters are in his attic office helping him write? If so, I found it to be a delightful movie. We may have to watching it today.
Exactly.
God bless us, Everyone.
Saw this movie last year. Really well done take on “A Christmas Carol” and the background story to the story. Well acted. Good production values. Kid / family friendly movie.
Watched it last year. I enjoyed it too
We’re about to watch the 1951 Christmas Carol. First year in many that we haven’t been to see the only copy of the original Christmas Carol at the Morgan library.
I agree. Eight Bow Ties out of a possible 9.5.
You made me laugh...Merry Christmas.
I thought Thomas Nast invented American Christmas (working in a house a 10 minute walk from mine). Maybe it was Irving Berlin.
When my wife began painting, she painted my favorite books as an exercise:
A good review of an interesting movie! You’ve reminded me to finally read a Kindle book I’ve had for ages, Charles Dickens’ Night Walks, essays about his walks around London at night — just what the title says!
You flatter me. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Well worth the money! Very entertaining and is a great movie.
that’s awesome!
It also tends to sentimentalize the celebration of His birth into a maudlin tale of personal redemption.
