Americans have a 1-in-1,000 chance of dying of COVID-19 in the next six months, a Stanford University health expert said Thursday at a Food and Drug Administration hearing.
Dr. Steven Goodman, an associate dean at Stanford’s School of Medicine, based that probability off recent statistics showing roughly 285,000 deaths in the country over the last seven months and about 1,000 deaths a day.
“A randomly chosen US citizen has an average risk of dying from COVID in the next 6 months, that is by the end of May, of roughly 1 in 1,000 and the risk of hospitalization of roughly about 1 in 200,” Goodman told an FDA advisory committee at a virtual hearing.
“These numbers obviously vary widely by individual,” he said.
Goodman said the findings also don’t factor in Wednesday’s record mortality rate, when 3,000 daily deaths were reported for the first time.
The all-day hearing is being held by the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, which is weighing whether the benefits of Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine outweigh the risks — and it should be approved for emergency use.
The panel of 23 health experts will vote at the end of the meeting.

Anyway, good news for you. I knew about the difference it makes from what age you calculate because I checked that out when I took early retirement.
1:200 for hospitalization?
That seems very, very high. If we did not see that type of hospitalization earlier in the year, unless the virus mutated in a bad way, there isn’t a chance we see that. Especially with vaccinations coming in the next few months.
When these people are coming up with the numbers, do they even run them by the person in the next cubicle to see if they pass the “smell” test?

Brave persons need toilet tissue too (hiding out is in effect seceding from society itself).
Whatever...I will believe the truth. I say “it’s just the flu, bro”. But for the young it is less than the flu.
It really is a very high level “wild assed guess.”
In order to accurately predict this you have to ask if you are eldery, sickly, and live in a hot spot. In THOSE cases the chances of getting sick are higher.
If you are not elderly, in decent shape, and don’t go hanging out with hordes of people...you should be OK. And even if you get it, you would be very unlikely to go to the hospital or die.
I did some standard statistics in the past for quality control—and I am stunned at the people playing “Statistician” these days. They state things as if they are facts, when in reality they are playing pretty loose with the numbers.
I ALWAYS had 100 rolls. I had a wife, mother in law, and two daughters living in a home with 2.5 bathrooms. If I did not have a reserve...I would always run out. I just bit the bullet one day and I’ve stayed ahead of the curve for 15 years.
I guess I’m somewhere in the middle on this issue.
I think is was a mild bio-weapon that was released in order to help get rid of Trump. (appears to have accomplished its mission).
Sure idiots like Como spiked the death count by putting sick people in nursing homes. (Manslaughter).
But it has also killed lots of healthy, younger people. The local prison had 100’s of prisoners die from covid. They were mostly young and healthy.
I guess some people won’t take this seriously until someone they know dies from it.
If you look at some of the tables, if you make it to your late 90s the odds of living another year are “almost” better than when you are 90.
Actuarial tables are fun.
THIS WORKS in 94% of people who take it within 4-5 days of infection (I’m a survivor):
Hydroxychloroquine Protocol (Hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin [or doxycycline] plus zinc).

Life expectancy is different from life span. The life expectancy of a newborn male is around 76 years. After growing up and quite a few boys and young men dying of various accidents and what not, the life expectancy of a man 26 years old is significantly more than 76 years. The life expectancy of an 80 year old man is more than 80 years. I don’t know the exact number but once you get into your 70’s you have outlasted a lot of the things that make younger men die. For instance heart attacks. Younger men die of heart attacks at a much greater rate than older men. Not that they have more just that a heart attack is more likely to kill you if you are younger.
If you’re a rock climber/hang glider/Ducati rider/dater of much younger women, you just laugh at the faggotry of this fearmongering author.
Which local prison are you referring to? If you are going to use it to support your argument I want to see it please. It should be easy to say which prison without revealing too much about yourself. I’m just asking because I haven’t heard of any prison having hundreds of inmates die let alone of COVID.
Soon there will be only 99.98% of us left to tell the tale!

“And people here talk about FIGHTING FOR Secession or a CWII???
So many cowards bought 4000 rolls of toilet tissue and hid for half a year.
What a farce this whole virus and election and honestly, country have become.”
Hear, hear!
Looks like some have read the book “Lying with Statistics” and are applying the principles very well.
Fortunately for you, that's not how it works. The "average life expectancy" is driven down by early deaths. Everything from SIDS as an infant, driving as a teen, drive by shootings in Chicago, wars, disease, accidents, etc. You survived all the dangerous stuff. For a US male who has reached the age of 70, the average life expectancy is 14 years. And if you make it to 84, you have even odds to make it to 90. So go ahead and buy those green bananas, you have plenty of time! At 70, the probability of dying within 6 months is 15/2000, or 0.75%. That's still 7.5X higher than the author says people have of dying from COVID within 6 months.
No, because it affects the old and infirm worse than others.
Lying with statistics.
Brave people who wanted to save money bought bidet kits. Now, if I could just get my wife outta the john every now and then... ;)
:-)
1.65 million of us to be hospitalized with Covid within the next six months?
I don’t think so!
