What is with calling cities like LA or NYC “great”? They most assuredly are not “great”. Unless you like filth, corruption and crime.

One way tickets to Portland, and $50 in cash

cheapest, most effective method there is.

In the early ‘90’s the Sarasota paper hired a private detective and some kind of analyst and did a study of the homeless. It was so shocking and against the narrative and what they expected I was surprised they published it. A significant number of the homeless had bank accounts, retirement checks, cars and stayed in motels when it rained. They simply didn’t want to live in a house. The analyst used some formulas also used by the IRS and calculated that the panhandlers were making significant money as it was untaxed. Sarasota’s homeless at that time were way above what you see in big cities today.

“It is hard to argue with success.”

That’s odd. I see it being done in nearly every news story—especially those dealing with President Trump.

Give them bus tickets to Portland. Drugs legal there.

That’s not fair, Los Angeles has done a fabulous job with the homeless, they are booming, growing and expanding daily. I would bet the Homeless population has expanded by 20% since the first of the year.

“Treat the underlying causes of homelessness, not the symptom..”

Like we did for generations until the “progressives” had their way and the Looney Tunes were turned out of the asylums.
I think the Kennedy clan played a big part in that?

We have not beat homelessness in the Sarasota area.

I know some homeless people have gotten subsidized housing or in one case I know a job with housing attached.

Watch the bus stops. If the guy is still there after the bus passes, the guy is homeless.

My local Wal-Mart has about three to four outdoor residents.

In 1987, I refused to walk around downtown LA because of a homelessness problem.

When I was last there about ten years ago, they had built some subsidized apartment buildings for the locals.

That is very interesting. The article breaks down groups this way:

20 – 40% mental illness
15 – 40% substance abuse
“Large%” - In (actually out-of) prison
?% - disability

To that, I'd add the group you described:
Grifters

The article doesn't detail exactly what was done, for each group needs a different approach, and some ppl fit in multiple groupings.

It's a start, and I liked how the article skewers 'advocates'.

Years ago I was waiting on a bus in Hong Kong, early in the morning on Nathan Road when a taxi pulled up. A guy in a loin cloth got out of the taxi. He had a rolled up mat. He spread the mat out on the ground laid down to beg pretending to be crippled.

I remember reading that bums in NYC were making hundreds of dollars a day panhandling on the subway.

I imagine it is the same for other places.

Well, the story says cut the numbers in half. So beating doesn’t mean there are none. Just a lot fewer, while LA has a lot more.
