If the machines were not secured immediately after the election, the software code could’ve been changed by now.

I would want to also examine the system logs. This would track all changes to the system. And these logs may also be forwarded to remote location,

If they maintained it on GitHub that could track the changes, but I suspect they wouldn't be using it.

Github & Git are two different things.

Git version control is open source and has become ubiquitous. There are multiple commercial software repositories based on Git:

• Github
• Gitlab
• Bitbucket

There are also self hosted versions of Git (such as Gitlab) that allow you to host your repositories on your own servers.

Bottom line: there's a 95% chance they are using Git to store their software changes. The question is: were they using a central service like Github or Bitbucket, or were they hosting the software on their own private server (and can we find it)?

Even if they weren't using Git, there's a 100% chance they were using some form of version control (like SVN or Mercurial). Modern software systems simply don't fly by the seat of their pants anymore when it comes to version control.
