The Ohio General Assembly voted last week to strip Gov. Mike DeWine of the “ultimate authority” accorded to his health department to impose statewide pandemic orders. Senate Bill 311 was approved in the Ohio House on a party-line vote by a margin of 58-32....Rep. Scott Wiggam, a Republican and cosponsor of the bill, announced on Facebook that checks and balances have been restored to state government. Senate Bill 311 “will allow the Ohio House and Senate oversight through public hearings into the Department of Health order....s,” he wrote. “The General Assembly will be able to rescind the orders with a simple majority resolution.”....Republicans say they have a veto-proof majority in the House, however, they will need to secure an additional vote in order to thwart DeWine. Rep. John Becker, who has been an outspoken critic of the governor’s COVID-19 lockdown measures, along with Reps. Steve Hambley and Scott Lipps, have indicated that they will vote to override a DeWine veto.

I think it may be veto proof. Funny though, they’re stripping him of powers he never legally had.

I get the impression, as a young student, he saw the inside of one too many lockers and he’s seeking revenge.

I think you are correct.

You would think a short guy who has managed to produce 23 grandchildren and counting would by now feel that he has proven his virility and manhood and would not need to resort to being a polite bully to seek revenge against all the people who did not go to high school with him.

According to Wikipedia, the party split in the Ohio state legislature is:

Senate: 33 Rep 9 Dem
House: 61 Rep 38 Dem

What does it take under Ohio law for the legislature to override the Governor?

Akso from wiki

A three-fifths majority of each chamber is necessary to override a governor’s veto in Ohio – that is 60 votes in the 99-member House.

The GOP doesn’t have the votes to override.

DeWine believes to his core he is doing what’s in Ohioan’s best interest. The worst kind of tyranny. Incoming or detest him as much as Kaysick. I swear the last gov of Ohio I could tolerate was Strickland (not the Senator version Strickland). As gov he was almost devoid of moralizing and preaching. Didnt agree with him on much but he never claimed moral superiority on the things he did.

He is a big government conservative who doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with government power so long as he is the one exercising it.

The GOP *does* have the votes, and if Governor DeWine vetoes SB311, his veto will be overridden.

The worst excuse for a Governor in Ohio's history and that is saying something since he “seceded” perennial presidential candidate loser John Kasick. Drama queen. King Midas of fertilizer world. Should go to hell but too stupid to find the way.

60 in the House, 20 in the Senate.

Senate votes are there, not sure about the House.

One big problem is even if the veto is overridden the law won’t take effect for 90 days.

It’s freerepublic so I understand no one reads the article. But it says right in the article that they need one more vote in the house to override. Which means they will not override.

This is from the Richland Source (Romanchuk is my Rep.):

“Despite the fact Republicans control the House and Senate, an override of a veto is not guaranteed, Romanchuk said. It was approved 20-13 in the Senate and 58-32 in the House. Nine House members, including three Republicans, didn’t vote on Thursday.

An override majority requires 20 votes in the Senate and 60 in the House. Romanchuk said he has seen legislation in the past when lawmakers voted in favor of a bill and then against an override, “for a variety of reasons.””

Stitches USA and Buckeye Mask Company Use First-of-its-Kind Automation in the U.S. to Produce Millions of Masks in Ohio
August 13, 2020

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Governor Mike DeWine announced that Stitches USA and Buckeye Mask Company will partner to produce high-quality, cotton face masks on a large scale, bolstering domestic PPE manufacturing capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using first-of-its-kind automation in the United States, the combined efforts of both companies can produce over 1.5 million masks a month for civil use.

“The partnership between Buckeye Mask and Stitches USA demonstrates how Ohio manufacturers are stepping up to meet the challenges presented by COVID-19,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “At the beginning of this crisis, I said that we would work to bring PPE manufacturing back to Ohio and the United States to reduce our reliance on foreign markets. This partnership is part of that effort and a great win for Ohio.”

“We saw an acute need in Ohio for efficient production of PPE and stepped up to the challenge,” said Carla Macklin, president of startup Buckeye Mask Co. in Cleveland. “The speed at which this project came together has been incredible and was made possible by the efforts and foresight of so many across the State.”

Stitches USA, headquartered in Sugarcreek, and Buckeye Mask, based in Cleveland, were connected through the Ohio Manufacturing Alliance, a partnership among the Ohio Manufacturers Association, Ohio Development Services Agency, JobsOhio and its network, and the Ohio Hospital Association. The Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network (MAGNET) is providing engineering capabilities and technical support to make PPE. Normally competitors, the companies combined efforts to reduce costs, increase efficiency and make the greatest impact at a critical time.
