Why do they have a live signing interpreter for the streaming video. Wouldn’t close captioning make more sense?

I've noticed the same thing since the Rona started, mostly with lefty governors and public officials. I think it's a standard thing on a democrat press function punchlist.

We have the technology to automatically transcribe speech with nearly word-for-word perfection, but still there's this insistence on keeping a very distracting ASL interpreter on screen, dividing the screen and distracting from the speaker, for the benefit of maybe .25% of the audience?

Yes, I know that interpreters provide more benefit to their audience than just a running transcript, relaying emotion and inflection and all that, but 99.9% of a public official's press conference is relaying words that lose no effectiveness in print.

It's got to be a virtue signalling thing much more than actually serving the needs of deaf people. They're diminishing the effect of these speeches and press releases by surrendering half the screen for all of the audience to provide an extra 0.1% of information to 0.25% of the audience. A microcosm of leftist thought in a nutshell.
