Can’t be sure, it’s never happened. First of all realize that only the Electors will actually vote for either Biden or President Trump. The rest of us will actually be voting for Electors pledged to for Trump or Biden. If he were to die on Nov. 1st, or really any time before the EC vote, I suppose the dems could substitute another candidate and direct their Electors to vote for him or her.
The real election (Electoral College) is on December 14. If he should die after the Electoral College vote, then if the dems win, it will be President Harris.
But before any of this, there would be all kinds of hell break loose. There would be court challenges on the legality of counting votes for a dead man, etc. etc. States’ EC votes might well be challenged. But since it is 2020, who knows?

Excellent question. A retired and a strong conservative RN relative believes that we might not be told until next year or maybe never told as a stand in gets sworn in and the suddenly “dies.” or gets assassinated. She loves the dark political fiction novels.
My wife, also an RN, has read so many dark political fiction novels since March, she has sworn off them since 1 October.
She is now re reading all of her nice/happy books like her Father Tim books.
