Prepper Ping – USA – Food Scarcity following a Global Pandemic
Globalism problem – is it real, or fear mongering ? Is there really a world-wide food shortage ? You decide.

“.. the UN World Food Program is projecting that the number of people facing “severe food insecurity” in Latin American and Caribbean nations
will rise by a whopping 270 percent in the months ahead."

“Grocery stores across the United States are stocking up on products to avoid shortages during a second wave of coronavirus.
Household products — including paper towels and Clorox wipes — have been difficult to find at times during the pandemic,
and if grocery stores aren’t stocked up and prepared for second wave this winter, runs on products and shortages could happen again. “

“We have entered a time when global food supplies are going to become increasingly stressed, and it is going to be absolutely critical to keep U.S. food production at the highest levels possible.
Smaller farms, meanwhile, had average payments of around $300.
The figures did not take into account other struggling farmers who are ineligible for assistance.
Reading those numbers greatly frustrated me, because family farms have always been so critical to our success as a nation.

”U.S. farm bankruptcies hit an eight-year high last year, and they are on pace to go even higher this year. “ (Emphasis mine).

(Post #37) Datura : “ China will find themselves in a real bind regarding food - their storage facilities are full of rotten and damaged grains, much of which has been stolen or redistributed.
Provincial government managers do not dare tell the truth, or they lose their cushy jobs.
The floods and droughts in China, combined with locusts and swine flu have decimated food supply chains.

Read the various comments contained in this ongoing posting.
There is an alleged shortage of aluminum cans, supposedly because many people, much more than usual, are cooking and eating at home instead of restaurants.
Is it real ? .. Or is it a manufacturing issue ?
Also, many grocery warehouses are stocking up now for a possible second wave of the Covid pandemic.
Are you prepared enough, even though you used supplies during the last Covid outbreak ? Have you re-supplied used items ?
OODA loop advised.

I am currently eating “prepper food” from my test shelf. It’s two cans of ready-to-eat soup. Both expired exactly five years ago. Both taste good.

This seems like the time for me to regain that storage space and restock it with fresh cans, but I’ve answered my question on keeping cans beyond expiration. Other than the test shelf, I rotate my storage, so I don’t need to know if food is okay more than 5 years after expiration. Acidic foods (usually tomato-based) can eat through the can and are very obviously bad around 2-3 years beyond expiration. Canned tuna can also be risky after a few years and is very obviously (open it outside!) bad. Otherwise, shelf life for modern canned foods is very long.

Generic recipe: One can of ready-to-eat soup plus one pound of pasta or rice. It’s not gourmet, but it’s adequate and allows for a lot of cheap and easy variety calories. I have better in storage, of course, but I can eat for $2 a day on that recipe.

The good thing about Wave 2 is that we have Remdesevir and anti-inflammatories, and for those areas where it’s still legal to prescribe it, HCQ, too.* We know more about the Chinese Frankenvirus now than we did during Wave 1, so it’s not as likely to be the potential disaster as it was earlier this year.

*As far as I know, the FDA revoking emergency authorization of HCQ for the Chinese Frankenvirus disease does not mean that a doctor can’t prescribe it off-label, unless his state medical board prohibits that action.

Already restocked everything we used during the shut down and since then. T.Paper we are back to a year’s worth. Several refill containers of hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, bleach, vinegar, aloe vera, and alcohol 70%.

Our stores no longer carry 90% alcohol, which was what we were stocking. We have also added to our supply of canned meats and fish-tuna, salmon, and clams. Doubled the supply of canned soups and entrees.

We have ordered and received seeds for planting next spring.
We are getting ready to order a cistern to collect rainwater off the roof. Primarily to water the garden during the summer dry period, but can be filtered to use for drinking water-size will be about 2000 gallons.

We’ll continue to add to our stores a little each month. We always buy at least one item for storage-a box of salt, box of baking soda, container of rubbing alcohol-whatever. A buck or two each time-doesn’t cripple the budget.
