The big criteria for Jon Karl and most of the rest of the mainstream media in judging a debate performance is WHO the debater is, not what his performance was like. A perfect example of this can be seen in this video.

I still remember the look on Ryan’s face when Biden started going off. Biden was a creep who would laugh at almost everything Ryan said.

Well Ryan is exactly the kind of guy that tactic would work on.
And Trump is exactly the kind of guy that tactic simply cannot work on. Trump is a brawler. It's no surprise the media are crying. They thought Slow Joe was going to pull a Paul Ryan on Trump. It wasn't even close. Trump shut Biden down before he could even start any of his tricks. He made Biden totally lose it so much he was reduced to calling Trump “a clown”.
