Germany’s Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Gerd Muller, has warned that lockdown measures throughout the globe will end up killing more people than the Coronavirus itself.
In an interview with German newspaper Handelsblatt, Muller warned that the response to the global pandemic has resulted in “one of the biggest” hunger and poverty crises in history.
Muller warned that further damage will be done if draconian measures continue to be enacted by governments.
“We expect an additional 400,000 deaths from malaria and HIV this year on the African continent alone,” Muller emphasised, adding that “half a million more will die from tuberculosis.”
“The supply of food and medication is no longer guaranteed,” Muller continued, adding “Many of the West’s aid programs are not adequately funded,” also noting that while countries focus on battling the virus at home, it is having a massive toll on countries not equipped to combat it without help.
Muller further warned that “humanitarian catastrophes” are “building up right on our doorstep,” while European governments concentrate on lockdowns and restricting the movement of people...

I read that cancer detections are down 60% so far this year. Cancer hasn’t gone away, it just means many people won’t detect it until its too late.

Add suicide and a host of non-lethal psychoses fostered by the tensions of economic losses and uncertainty.
Has not our own CDC Director* talked about the rise in suicides exceeding COVID-19 fatalities?
*Does anyone have actual data on this from responsible sources? I’ve challenged FReepers to come up with such, but only received irrelevant or nonsensical replies.
Granted that in the US, mitigation related fatalities by starvation will be minimal. However, some poor countries may have serious problems in this regard.
OTOH, at this point, even in IL, where my elderly Mom (and her doctor) are, we are back to pretty much regularly scheduled checkups, etc., except that she no longer has to go in monthly, in person, at considerable discomfort, and significant inconvenience to me, to actually see the Dr. to have the script for her pain med renewed. Instead, as POA, I can call in the request, then stop by, show ID, and pick up the script at the front desk. That part of Mom’s situation has actually improved since pre-CV-19 days.
One of my Mom’s sitters is in rather poor health herself, and has to have “procedures” fairly often. She seems to be having no problem getting in for them, other than each time, a new COVID-19 test (readily available) has to be run and results obtained, beforehand. Again, this is “even in IL”, with Pritzker as Governor.
SFAIK, NO hospital or health care facility in this region, other than retirement or nursing homes, has had a significant problem with internal transmissions of CV-19. IMO, any ongoing serious fear of such by patients is irrational and NOT being stoked by government, the media, or any legitimate person in the health care field. One is more likely to become ill from one of those nasty bacteria that hang around health care facilities (and IIRC, those numbers are significantly down.)
Lastly, the comparison by the Minister is not apples to apples. An honest comparison would attempt to evaluate mitigation caused (and related?) deaths at various levels of mitigation intensity, vs. CV-19 caused (and related?) deaths at various levels of mitigation intensity. This seems like a difficult task (to make good predictions), but I would point out that once the various factors had been in play for a while (better understood), fatality projections for CV-19, published by responsible parties such as Worldometers, assuming expected mitigation, have actually been quite accurate. The “error” by Labor Day, for example, was well under 5%, and the history of it is that CDC’s final numbers will close that gap a bit more.
OTOH, your mention of “non-lethal psychoses” (on all sides) is a good point. It is too often left out of the discussion.
If data on that is being centrally collected I expect it is far too soon to expect it to be processed and released to the public.
Redfeld seemed to be pretty sure about it back in mid-July, though, granted, he did not cite specific numbers. But he must have had some reasonably solid data.

That said, there does appear to be an important nuance: Reading the actual transcript, I think he was talking about High School age suicides, and of course the number of CV-19 fatalities in that group is quite low.
