"On the other side of the ledger, the eventual deployment of American hypersonic weapons—whose conventional payload might conceivably lower the bar for their use—is likely to exacerbate Chinese and Russian fears about a preemptive strike on their nuclear forces,...A trilateral forum—or, better, two bilateral ones—between the three nuclear powers could jump start the conversation around concrete risk reduction. Agreements could be reached..."

Not true, Zack. Both Russia and China were already trying to develop the same weapons. Stop writing commie propaganda. Read some real history, boy, and stop believing what our commies dish out (like "The Day After"). Our foreign enemies have repeatedly proven that they cannot be trusted with such agreements, and such agreements are not verifiable enough.

Shooting War Could Go Nuclear, marktwain wrote: The "not to play" strategy is simple capitulation.

Basic Communist propaganda.

Don't fight, give up. We have already won. Better red than dead.

All the same message.

The intent is to demoralize and encourage capitulation. This was the underlying hidden message from the novel "On the Beach" - futility and inevitability; it dawned on me when I watched the movie a second time.

From Wikipedia:

"The novel does not realistically describe the effects of a global nuclear war, which were poorly understood at the time. Notably, the novel does not portray any form of nuclear winter. In the survival manual Nuclear War Survival Skills, Cresson Kearney describes the novel as "pseudoscientific" and "demoralising", arguing that it and similar works perpetuate the myth that any large-scale nuclear war would inevitably wipe out all human life. This myth, argues Kearney, is dangerous as it discourages people from taking precautionary measures that could save lives in the event of a nuclear attack, in the mistaken belief that any precaution is futile."

Mostly crap is that article.

We will not go nuclear unless hit with nukes. You could take out every missile we have that is land based and every nuclear capable aircraft we have and our submarines with literally thousands of nuclear warheads will destroy the enemy.

We are not on a hair trigger of use it or lose it. Those subs are the ultimate weapon of destruction to an enemy that attacks us first.

Nuclear war is survivable for most people by far. Rebuilding and full recovery would probably happen far more quickly than most people realize, agriculture included.

“Those subs are the ultimate weapon of destruction to an enemy that attacks us first.”

100% correct. Unfortunately for China and Russia, their boomers won’t guarantee them a response. The most important mission for US Navy SSN’s is to constantly track every enemy boomers that puts to sea, and follow them throughout their patrol and if need be, be in position to sink them if they ever hear them making preparations to launch their missiles.

Know nothing “expert”in my opinion. As a life long military analyst I can honestly say, in my unofficial personal opinion, that we are farther from nuclear war between major powers than at any time since the end of the second world war— reason, since the end of the Cold War, war has grown to be much more about “soft power”, because it is a more effective counter to our strengths (which have been global projection of military power and decisive military action). If major powers can accomplish their strategic objectives without firing a shot during the so called “competition phase” of conflict, through economic, cyber, or media/disinfo/psy-ops campaigns then they will. Both the Chinese and Russians have already shown they are adept at doing just this. Likewise, for both, if they MUST use force, then they will use it so briefly that we don’t have time to react, deploy, or take decisive action, all the while denying their own responsibility, launching heavy disinformation campaigns, and working media and even our allies, then disengaging rapidly to move back to competition phase. Not to say that this is true for lessor powers— there is probably more risk of weak actors to acquire and use nuclear weapons; however, they have much more limited capabilities than major powers.

Roman_War_Criminal, this might be why the article was written (link below). We’ll probably see more articles warning against the Trump Administration’s much needed buildup and trying to frighten Americans into begging for another bad treaty.
