David Brooks: "Hubris" For Trump To Think He Could Talk To Bob Woodward "And Not Get Hurt By It"
RCP video ^ | 9-12-2020 | Ian Schwartz

Posted on 09/12/2020 6:16:36 AM PDT by Sir Napsalot

PBS NEWSHOUR ....

(snip)

BROOKS: First, the hubris to think, you could be the president and talk to Bob Woodward and not get hurt by it. Donald Trump walked right into this.

Two, the extreme cynicism of not only bumbling around in February and March, because you didn't know how serious the pandemic was, but the confirmation that you did know, and you still thought you could talk it down, as if you can talk down a force of nature, and that this — you wouldn't end up getting caught.

So, there's just a level of cynicism that's been revealed, more than just incompetence.

And then, finally — and, to me, this is most revealing, I guess — is the idea that, if you had told the American people the truth, they would have panicked.

It betrays a disregard and a condescension toward the American people which is totally ridiculous.

And so I do think there's new stuff here, as there was last week in the Jeffrey Goldberg piece about what he said about the war dead. There's just a continued display of mischaracter, of poor character, immoral character.

As for whether it will hurt, .... And the thing I would like to emphasize is that a lot of voters have given up on politics. They're what we call low-information voters. And the emphasis there is on low. They have written off politics. They're not paying attention to any of this. They will probably never hear of the Bob Woodward revelations. And so we have a race that is locked in stasis.

But the bad thing for Donald Trump is, he's only got a few weeks left, and this was yet another week of crisis and scandal that he was not catching up.

Brooks complained about 'low info' voters, then he brought up The Atlantic debunked piece by editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg.

Low-information voters tune out all enemediot chatter,

precisely because Brooks et al. peddling "The Atlantic Jeffrey Goldberg" type Bombshells, Breaking News, Trump scandal, current crises, etc.

Can we complete defund NPR, PBS, other taxpayer funded propaganda (i.e., DNC mouth piece) machines?

The exercise of power is not a parlor game. You must know and deal definitively with enemies.

Extreme smallness appears to be a built in trait of media pretend-males. Not necessarily in stature, but most certainly in intellect.

I don’t like David Brooks or PBS - but he’s right on this. Trump should not have talked to Woodward. I heard he gave him EIGHTEEN interviews for the book? What’s the point of doing that? These DNC stenographer hacks are THE ENEMY. Their goal is to DESTROY TRUMP. Why he continues to give these people interviews, clicks, book royalties is beyond me. I like Trump but his self-centeredness blinds him to the obvious sometimes.

If Trump knew the disease was serious in Feb and March he shoulda told Fauci, who was on every MEdia until early March downplaying the threat to the US. The WHO didnt even declare a pandemic until March.

Brooks is intellectually dishonest to blame Trump for not wanting to panic the public while his chief advisor Fauci ....who had direct ties to WHO and China...was doing the same thing.

Are people ‘low information or high information’ when they logically conclude all they are hearing and seeing is a lie and tune it out or ignore it. That seems like high information to me and a good working brain.

The propaganda press is the real low information entity.

Trump’s pants crease must not be as sharp as Obama’s, so he’ll never measure up in Brooks’ eyes.

There is essentially no one among the voting public who has not already decided to either support or oppose Trump. Woodward isn’t going to convince any Trump supporter to become an opponent, and his agenda is not to convince any Trump opponent to support him, so Trump had very little to lose by talking with Woodword, and much to gain by adding to his stock as someone who is willing to fly into the teeth of the enemy.

Who says Trump didn’t think he’d get hurt by it?

He had two choices. Talk to Woodward or don’t talk to him. Either way he’s going to get hurt.

This was the least of the two and Woodward has to feel hurt. All he’s got is the president saying he did what he needed to do and was quiet about it. The leftists are screeching about it

Who cares? Trump doesn’t. He continues to treat them like the emotional equivalents of 4 year olds. Which they are

How was he hurt? Not one vote changed by this I would guess

Typically Brooks thinks Trump is “catching up.”

Wrong.

He also thinks this is a “scandal” that will hurt him.

Wrong.

These idiots who think their opinions are so important that they just have to warn the people are pretty funny...

“[Brooks] also thinks this is a “scandal” that will hurt [Trump].”

I don’t believe Brooks thinks that. He is attempting to get mileage out of it. But it’s over. Woodward has to be sitting around thinking geeze I was hoping this book would sell.

February 29th, Fauci was saying...just go about what you normally do...Covid is no big deal...we’re watching it.

Well, he’s definitely discounting what Fauci said that the president DID NOT PLAY IT DOWN! That’s to his advantage. They sure have a knack of ignoring everything that doesn’t fit their scenario with their fingers crossed that no one will call them on it.

[I like Trump but his self-centeredness blinds him to the obvious sometimes.]

Trump’s blind spot is that he thinks he can sell sand to Arabs and ice to Eskimos. That’s why he keeps referring to Putin and Xi with terms like “friend” and so on, despite their fairly hostile acts, as well as his sanctions on them. It’s as if he’s completely internalized Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking, and tuned out all the negative possibilities.
