Worms are real. I use them for fishing sometimes.
The movie I’d pay to see has the “Dune” sandworms in a cage match against the “Beetlejuice” sandworms.
Graboids from the movie Tremors need to be included in this death match.
I am a huge fan of the original Dune and after watching that trailer, I doubt I will watch the remake.
JoMa
There was a version on Syfy back in the 80s where they put another hour or so back in and made it a two part mini series. It made the story much more understandable.
Paul looks like Kylo Ren.
Pretty sure the sand-slogging worms in both of those movies were inspired by Dune.
I think that was the one with William Hurt, and I kind of liked that one.
The one with Sting...well, that one was just...bad.
Gotta ping the cast on FR!
I thought the same thing. Wimpy looking.
The SCI FI channel versions I think will remain the gold standard though the matte paintings and set looked chintzy in the first Dune series.(the acting was good and the story adaptations compelling with a very effectively over the top Baron Harkonnen) The network’s second dune series...”Children of Dune” looked much better and had very good actors. The whole look of Children and the cinematography was better in the second series. Aillyah’s descent into abomination was very well played and James McAvoy’s portrayal of Leto displayed acting talent years beyond his reported age of 18 when he played the role.
The scope of this book is such that it will never be made into a good movie-length film. Miniseries maybe...
But thats been tried, too.
That and the inherent ironic joke....a whole universe hooked on and dependent on basically worm excreta! The series included references to the Butlerian Jihad where folks had gotten rid of advanced computers and AI so that star navigation by computers was lost thus leaving the people of the universe dependent on mutated humans who used Melange induced prescience to guide commerce thru the stars.
Worm crap....Herbert made millions on books where society revolved around worm crap and the stagnation that society had entered into because of such worm “crap”!
Let’s see .....what could be done with “fish scales” from some exotic fish!??
They didn’t make Paul Atreides a gay transvestite? It would have been easy.
No one has ever come close to Dino de Laurentis’ original (published under his daughter’s name).
The SCI FI channel series 1 and 2 were very good though the look of series one was disappointing. Series 2 or Children of Dune featured a young but very talented James McAvoy....way way beyond his years talented!
I disagree...that movie was a horrible mishmash...not watchable even in its various release edits!
Actually 2000-2001. In 2003 there was Children of Dune featuring a very young and gifted James McAvoy.
It was this one. David Lynch disowned it.
Theatrical version is 137 minutes long; TV version seen both in syndication and on most cable networks, prepared under protest from (and eventually disowned by) director David Lynch, is approx. 176 minutes long (minus commercials) and features outtakes, additional footage, test close-up shots of certain actors, and even fabricated (i.e. “cheated”) footage (made up of repeated stock footage from certain points in the film to make it appear that footage had been added—one reason why Lynch took his name off the credits of the TV version). The TV print credits ‘Alan Smithee’ as director. Whereas the theatrical release features a brief introductory narration spoken by Princess Irulan, the TV version has a longer spoken introduction by an uncredited male narrator, with still paintings and drawings used to bring the viewer up to speed on the story. The TV version (which has been released on Japanese LaserDisc and overseas DVDs) has additional footage of the Fremen that lacks the blue color in their eyes, indicating that the scenes were cut before special f/x were added.
I kinda liked it when I saw it. The theatrical version was too disjointed.
