The Resistance Library Podcast: The Economics of Slavery With Mises Institute Fellow Mark Thornton

On this episode Sam invites Mark Thornton onto the show. Together they discuss the economics of slavery and the long lasting effects of it on economies.

Mark Thornton is an economic historian and a senior fellow with the Mises Institute. While everyone knows a bit about slavery, few think about the economics of it. It is the contention of Thornton that slavery was not a profitable institution in the antebellum South and that its after effects continue to drive the industrial underdevelopment of the region today.

The South is the only conservative area of the country. Preserving that is much more important than so called economic development. When corporations come in, a leftist agenda comes with them. Beware.

The Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves caused the South to lose at least 60% of its net worth overnight as they lost “human capital”, a major source of their wealth. This reduction triggered a call on their loans from Northern banks.

The Midwest up through the Dakotas is fairly conservative as well; I remember reading that one of the Dakotas was closing its last abortion mill due to a lack of “clients”.

That would be the most heartening solution to abortion – its abolition not out of legislation, but instead a total absence of a demand for it.

That’s right, but convincing people they are killing a child is key.

That would not be such wonderful news if demand dropped only because no one was getting pregnant. Video game addiction, drug addiction, homosexuality, and poor health among the young impacts fertility.
