I went to the local Health Department free testing site. There was an hour wait but no charge. I did not want me or my insurance getting gouged.

FWIW, we got tests on insurance because the state testing sucks. No transparency on who is actually doing the testing and it takes forever to get back. We knew where and who was doing the testing and had a detailed report back in less than 72 hours. We know folks getting tested through the state who are waiting for results for over a week.

We checked to see what our insurance was charged. The insurance company was charged exactly what we were quoted at the private sector testing site we used.

For non emergency treatment, ask to see the fee schedule before treatment. One of the biggest reasons ‘health care’ costs are out of control is almost no one cares what it cost because they think they’re not playing the bill

Some states have enacted medical truth in billing laws. Otherwise, pending similar new Trump rules going into effect, the medical billing system remains a near criminal enterprise for its lack of disclosure and thorough dishonesty.

The total charge was not for virus test.

She had an emergency room visit, which is where it all started, and it was that emergency room visit itself, not the virus test that was conducted, that accounts for the bulk of the $2K plus charge.

Here in NJ, with a doctors note you can go to many different CVS or Walgreen locations and get a test for a nominal fee.
