Calcio Storico is football like you’ve never seen before! Dating back to the 15th century, this early form of the game is brutal. But behind the blood and punches lie a story of tradition, pride and honour. A sport as unique and loved in Florence as ACF Fiorentina are, next season will see a unique collaboration between the two... #4Quartieri1CuoreViola #4Districts1PurpleHeart

Looks like as much fun as the Roman Colosseum was.

The Mayans had a fascinating version of ‘soccer’:

The Roman game was called haspartum, and was derived from the earlier Greek phaininda. All such ancient tackle games are proof that rugby, and later gridiron derivatives American and Canadian football, did not begin when a student at the Rugby School picked up a soccer ball and ran with it during a match in 1823. Contact and non contact versions of “football” came down through the ages side by side. They were codified into soccer, rugby (two different versions), Gaelic football, Australian rules football, American and Canadian football, etc. during a long process in the 1800s.
