I ran a 9.7 100 yards in 1965. That was in high school. At the time the women’s world record was held by Chi Cheng from Taiwan. I watched her on TV a few times and no other woman really even pushed her.
I did get a full scholarship to Troy University. I was a hurdler and sprinter but we had another guy named James Batie who ran a 9.3. I saw him beat the world record holder in the 50 indoors.
My time in the hundred would not have gotten me a scholarship at the larger schools.
I held the 120 yard H.H. record for 28 years at Troy. It was not that fast but I won a lot of records anyway.
