Although a 22 makes a great, inexpensive plinking pistol. Word is, and I’ve never tried it, there are 22-quiet rounds that might allow you to hunt critter pests in the city without alerting your neighbors.

Here is video demonstrating the different noise levels of various 22 ammo - including CCI quiets

For Later.
Yes,more than one too!
I prefer the .50 cal Desert Eagle as my self-defense pocket pistol. Okay, you need a pretty big pocket, but it’s a winner on stopping power. That said, at some point I’ll want to wear clothes that don’t conceal my Desert Eagle well enough, or I’ll be recovering from surgery or getting old and can’t handle it, or I’ll just like the fact that in 10 seconds I can empty 10 rounds from my S&W Model 617 into the bullseye at 25 yards.
Seriously, there are a lot of great pocket pistols. For some people and some situations, a .22 is the right choice.
The LCR and LCRx are also available in a 6-shot .327 Federal Magnum. Sort of an orphan cartridge, but it will also shoot .32 H&H. I have an SP-101 in .327 and reload for it. Fun gun to shoot.
.32 caliber is sort of forgotten in the pocket pistol regime. .32 ACP is also fun, but I do not have one.
Buddy had a .327 Mag which he liked.
Can’t go to that dangerous site thru the office firewall. Will look at it latter. I have a .22mag S&W that I obtained recently an hope to try it out at the range this weekend.
I have a 351 PD Smith that is super light. What insterested me about the article is that Hornady Critical Defense and Speed Gold Dot .22 mags were hitting 1000+ feet per second out of the 2” barrel, getting 12+ inches penetration in gel, and expanding to 0.45”.
I believe mine is a model 17 wmr, need to check since it wasn’t added to my current license

A friend and I ran our own tests and the results vary greatly from these.
One thing is we used the same gun for both tests. It was a North American Arms mini gun. I think the barrel was a little shorter, maybe an inch and a half.
The difference in energy between the .22 short hi-speed and the .22 mag (Winchester 40 grain solids) was only five ft. lbs.
Personally, I wouldn’t carry a .22 for self-defense but I sure wouldn’t want to be shot by one, either. It might not kill you (however, it might) but it can certainly put you in a world of hurt.
Ward! How could you?

More people used to be killed by .22s than any other cartridge. That is why the so-called “Saturday Night Special” was so demonized back in 1968.
CEDARTOWN GEORGIA by Waylon Jennings
I got a gal in Cedartown, Georgia
I used to have to walk nearly three miles to court her
She never had much, just a sharecropper’s daughter
But I married her and took her down to New Orleans
She got a little house in the South French Quarter
***
Walkin’ into work this mornin’ at daybreak
I caught her with the tall long dandy from Canebrake
She walked right by me and she looked right through me
I made up my mind what I’m a gonna do
Eased in the pawnshop and bought a 22
I watched as the room clerk gave them a room key
A standin’ right outside I could read Room 23
Tonight I’ll put her on a train for Georgia
Gonna be a lotta kin folks squallin’ and a grieving
‘Cause that Cedartown gal ain’t breathing
The article premise (best .22 for pocket carry) is an example of stretching to find something to write about. There is a whole lot to talk about for CC before you talk about pocket pistols. That said, a few thoughts:
First, for defensive purposes you should carry or have at home the largest caliber you are comfortable shooting. No point in having a .44 Magnum if it scares you to shoot it. But within your comfort zone, bigger is better.
Second thought, where concealment is a concern, the bigger is better rule is tempered by your ability to conceal. So your body type, clothing, and style of carry all play into that.
Final thought, any gun is better than no gun when you need a gun.
