The White House on Monday further challenged Chinas coronavirus response narrative by praising heroes punished by the Chinese government for telling the truth about the coronavirus pandemic.
Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger addressed The University of Virginias Miller Center in a video, speaking in Mandarin about the story of Dr. Li Wenliang, a 34-year-old Chinese doctor who was detained by authorities after sounding the alarm about the dangers of the coronavirus on December 31. Skeptics questioned whether physical violence at the hands of Chinese authorities further damaged Lis health after he emerged from his arrest in a weakened condition.
Dr. Li wasnt a demagogue in search of a new ideology that might save China, he was an ophthalmologist and a young father who committed a small act of bravery and then a big act of bravery, Pottinger said, detailing his story.
Li was detained by Chinese authorities and forced to sign a letter renouncing his remarks.

BRAVO!!!! This is a detailed history of CCP's brutal rule, not just for the corona virus pandemic. NO OTHER admin will ever try this, in the name of celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
I am from Taiwan, even I understand Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger's mandarin perfectly.
/sometimes I have trouble understanding foreigners speaking mandarin
Oh man, the ChiComs wont like that at all!
I love the sound of Mandarin ever since seeing one of my favorite movies ever, Hero with Jet Li.
No, I cannot understand it or speak it, but I won’t watch that movie unless it’s in Mandarin with subtitles.
“...Oh man, the ChiComs wont like that at all!...”
The ChiComs, and their U.S. collaborators, can ALL go screw themselves...that’s what they tried to do to us. They can ALL go piss up a stump.
Hey, RATS, “Plan B” ain’t workin’ out so go either, huh? Well, you godless bassturds might want to seriously reconsider whatever your “Plan C” is because “Plan D” is us having all you evil SOBs dangling from rope....the whole darn bunch of ya.
Oh man. This is not just playing defense any more!
Ping!
Sounded pretty good to me, not being a speaker, but having hung out with a Mandarin-speaking family during college years.
Question for you: Does Taiwan have a different mainstream dialect than Mandarin?
Official language is mandarin, that’s been taught at school, so theoretically everybody speaks and understands mandarin.
But of course, like every parts of China, there are different dialects. So, yes, Taiwanese speak Taiwanese; Hong Kong-ers (?) speak Cantonese, etc. etc.
Fortunately we can all understand the written chinese characters (some in the traditional form, and some in the simplified form).
Thank you so muchvery interesting. I have friends from another ancient country with strong local dialects, and, like you describe for Taiwan, the schoolchildren learn the dialect and the official language and also English, presumably for computer or STEM studies. America does not have this history and tradition. We merely have “regional accents”ain’t that right?!
Speaking of the British and the Americans, George Bernard Shaw once said they are “Twe countries divided by a common language.”
You’re talking about India and Indians? They are even more ‘crazier’ than in China, wrt different regional dialects.
If I remember my Indian friends (long ago in college), there are hundreds of regional dialects in India. If you travel to different parts of India, even Indians themselves won’t understand the local dialect.
Actually, Kenyans. The children learn their tribal language as well as the official Swahili, and the Christian Kenyans also learn English in school, one of the beneficial holdovers from the former British rule. (The Kikuyu are the largest Christian tribe. Obama’s people are Luo, a muslim tribe.)
Ha, completely missed the mark.
Oh man, the Chinese won’t like that a lot”
Read this Speech by a Chinese General, esp. the last third.

I shared that with several folks today.
Chris have you seen “Crouching tiger, hidden dragon”?
It’s similar movie, in not being the full movie unless watched in the original language. The acting is so good that they aren’t really needed to know what is going on in the movie, well ast least the main jiyst.
Our enemies hate that President Trump has none of the “Kerry Nuance”...
