Sweden was right and had it not been an election year it’s probably what we would have done. But the DNC/MSM weaponized it to destroy Trump and it put him in a vice so the economy is in ruins.

The key word in that article: common sense.

I find it very interesting that Beijing, a city of 21 million people, has a total COVID-19 death toll of 9 people. I have also heard that Wuhan knew about the virus and its effects long before others found out. The rumor is that Wuhan shut the city down with respect to all modes of transportation, including all domestic flights, long before it stopped international flights into Wuhan. If there is some way to confirm that as fact, the burden of responsibility falls squarely on Chinese shoulders.

Absent a safe and effective vaccine, the best these lockdowns can do is to delay the fate of the vulnerable. Eventually even the isolated and quarantined vulnerable will come to sicken and die if they have the genetic and underlying medical predisposition. Some contact with the world is inevitable.

Boy this Patrick guy really likes to write.

The first 26 paragraphs were good :-)

And correct. I don’t understand how lockdowns works. Since so many will not have been exposed to it doesn’t that mean if only a few still have it that many more will get it once we reopen?

by the way you are the only person that posts both sides of the argument on this virus.

You seem to be leaning toward the lockdown being a bad idea but you are the only person that objectively posta articles for and against lockdowns.

I find that refreshing.

of course what I find doesn’t really matter at all on any level but I just thought I’d comment :-)

I think an honest discussion would look at Sweden’s closest neighbors in comparison.

Sweden. Pop. 10 mil. Deaths 2679
Finland. Pop. 5 mil. Deaths 230
Norway. Pop. 5 mil. Deaths. 211

Those stats don’t say that Sweden have the right answer.

Compare Hong Kong with Ewwwwww Yuck City.

Botha about the same size. Look at the difference in infection rate. Yet, HK is not completely locked down.

What did they do?
Hong Kong - The people there wore a mask, stayed clean, and stayed home if they are sick. Restaurants put up sneeze shields on tables and limited, slightly, the number of occupants. Schools closed. They also shut the border, for the most part, with the PRC. Mostly though, it was people, not the government remembering the lessons they learned during the SAR epidemic.

Ewwewwww Yuck - The government and people called President Trump a racist and accused him of overreacting before saying he didn’t do enough. (Which is it guys, it can’t be both)They then did nothing until the outbreak was out of hand.

Sweden and HK got it right. Ewwwww Yuckers have forfeited their right to complain.

The ChiComs are outright lying about their ChiCom Virus numbers. Though, reports of millions dead are also BS. Their numbers are most likely similar, per capita, to most other places. Because it’s a virus. It doesn’t care about politics. It just does what it does and there isn’t really much we can do about it, or we’d have cured the common cold decades ago.

RE: Those stats don’t say that Sweden have the right answer.

This is like talking about the debts of a country. You have a good time now but have to pay later. We cannot know what the right policy is until we see a (God forbid) SECOND WAVE when businesses re-open as they MUST eventually.

If there is no second wave, then yes, Sweden made a mistake. If there is,then Sweden, with its herd immunity strategy might have done better.

Mortality-spike

Norm-chart

So what’s happening in NY (especially NY City)? Is it there subways, population concentration, public housing and other special conditions contributing to the spread there?

“Those stats don’t say that Sweden have the right answer.”

Huh, so based on population and CFR, your chance of death in Sweden is .0002 and your chance of death in Finland/Norway is .00004.

I think I’ll take either of those chances while I live life. However YOU are FREE to clutch your pearls and cower in the closet in the fetal position for all eternity.

I’ve never seen such cowardice and ignorance in my life.

Who would have thought, you know, that Swedish social democracy would be in bed with American right-wing libertarians?

Right wing? Libertarians? The party whose motto, roughly, is live and let live?

Oh, puhleeese..

Iceland is an country with similar culture and climate.

It did not do lockdown, and has had 10 deaths for 364,000 population.

If they had Sweden's population, it would be 2,740 deaths. Basically the same rate.

But lockdown is not designed to stop the number of deaths, but to prevent overwhelming of the health care system.

Sweden's health care system was never overwhelmed, neither was Iceland's.

Over time, the number of deaths in Finnland and Norway is expected to reach the same level as Sweden's, it is just to take longer.

In mid-March Trump asked for “15 days to slow the spread” ostensibly to give health care facilities time to ramp up their medical supplies. The people willingly gave him that time. He shouldn’t have tacked another month onto that request. The governors pounced all over the uncertainty and fear created by the COVID-19 scare and here we are.

Well said. Who would have ever thought free Americans would be forced to shutter their business, or forced to wear something... anything, or forced to stand a certain distance? God help us that we can ever recover from (not a virus), but loss of freedom.

Add Denmark to the equation and the Sweden model looks even more grim.

Sweden’s immediate neighbors Norway, Denmark, Finland (all three embracing the lockdown model) have a combined population of 16.755 million & covid-19 death rate of 905. Sweden with a population of 10.183 million has a current death rate of 2669. Approx. three times higher in a population that is a third less than the combined population of her three neighbors.

And the name callers show up. You post simple facts to contribute to a complete and honest discussion and soon enough the name callers show up who add nothing to solving the problem but thrive on mocking others.

You are truly the ones living in fear. Fear of a simple, open, honest discussion.
