Bill Gates, poster child for a hefty and confiscatory wealth tax. Add to the list George Soros, Tom Steyer, Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffett, Koch brothers. While through my life I’ve favored a flat tax, and no taxes on estates or assets, I’m coming around to setting a limit on the amount of wealth any individual can accumulate or pass on tax free. Megabillionaires are doing significant harm to our society, culture and our political process. There is no counterbalance to their influence and power.
Taxing the foundations set up by these billionaires and the endowments of universities is worth consideration. Perhaps charitable foundations should have a sunset date beyond which their income and assets are taxes. Too many foundations are self perpetuating and are ultimately taken over by leftist professional administrators who change the purpose and direction from what the philanthropist who set up the foundation intended. Andrew Carnegie set up his foundation to establish and fund public libraries throughout the United States. His foundation hasn’t built a library in the US since the 1950’s. Today it funds leftist causes globally. The Ford Foundation is another example of a foundation which has deviated from its purpose.
