I know I don’t dare mention people who died from the flu, but I am anyway

Despite word going out that we are not allowed to talk about influenza afflictions and deaths, let’s look at that and the poor souls who died anyway.

The week of April 4 was the last week for estimates of the flu season. The weekly cumulative estimates for the United States from the CDC are: 39,000,000 to 56,000,000 were afflicted with the flu; 18,000,000 to 26,000,000 flu medical visits; 410,000 to 740,000 flu hospitalizations; and 24,000 to 62,000 died of the flu.

“The flu— none dare mention its name.”

You mean other than the countless number of times it’s mentioned here?

Didn’t you get the memo from the CDC??? This year all flu deaths are called “presumptive Covid-19” deaths. And don’t you dare ask for a test... because there is a narrow window when Covid-19 tests come back positive and they are in short supply... and if the body tested positive for the flu it just makes it that much more likely that it also had Covid-19.

Does anyone define the ILIs?

Thought not.

Influenza is not a reportable death.

All this crap is estimated. You guys act like it’s a box score.

I guess your reticence about mentioning the flu is because people have been trying to minimize the Corona virus epidemic by comparing it to the flu?

We are in about 1 month, and we have about forty thousand deaths. The entire flu season was estimated to be between 30 - 60 thousand. We'll pass the 60,000 mark for corona virus in a week or so.

Get it? Full flu season (8 months?) ~ 30-60 thousand.

1 month of Corona virus. 40,000.

I live in South Jersey and we have “Murphy’s Law” which pisses on the Constitution to keep us safe. NJ is labeled a hot spot but South Jersey has been very mild but the hysteria is insane.

Do you know anyone in the urban black community or on nursing homes? That’s where the bulk of illness is concentrated. Outside of that, illness is relatively sparse. Also the high flu estimates are coming from locations where there are significant covid19 hotspots. The flu test is a component of the complete covid19 screening test.

The flu...

A COVID19-like illness?

If you put on your Thinking Cap, you would consider that some number of influenza stats (both morbidity and mortality) were actually COVID-19 cases. How can this be?

1. Those with FLI symptoms who tested negative for Influenza A and Influenza B before COVID-19 testing was available or accurate were very likely COVID-19 cases,

2. Those who tested positive for either Influenza A or B were initially not also tested for COVID-19. Eventually, dual influenza and COVID-19 testing revealed people had both co-infections.

Unfortunately, some facts don't fit your agenda.

It was bad in Ga, especially in Feb and March. I lost an elderly relative to it on April 5.

Pneumonia kills people. Flu, Covid19, whatever. The CDC is lumping it all together.

Hospitals are making bank on the pandemic. So are health care workers who are banking huge overtime dollars. It’s a business....a bit dangerous. Kind of like being a security contractor during the Iraq war.

I’d presume that the data is going to be quite muddy, especially if we conclude that CV19 has been going around for weeks or months before we even knew to look for it. Stanford report that infections may be 50 to 85 times higher than testing for active infections indicates, based on select (limited, regional) antibody testing among random people.

So any number of flus from before mid February, we would only know if we did antibody tests.

And then there is this confusion where suspected deaths are counted as CV19 deaths. Politics aside, it will confound, conflate and inflate the numbers; while pre-February numbers probably are undercounted or non-existent.

Thanks for posting this, Cat.

I have been beating the influenza drum for more than a month.

I have another statistic that will interest you...

In at least 40 states - including California, Texas, and Florida (the three most populous) - there were more seasonal influenza deaths in 2018 than there are COVID deaths in 2020.

The most recent CDC state-by-state influenza data is from 2018.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/flu_pneumonia_mortality/flu_pneumonia.htm

In case you don't know, all of the CDC’s “final” influenza numbers are based on mathematical modeling - not on raw data - so all their “final” numbers are at least 6 to 18 months after the fact.

Re: "Does anyone define the ILIs?"

"ILI" stands for "Influenza Like Virus."

Yes - the CDC defines it and collects data on it.

For instance, the “common cold” - which can be caused by at least 4 different corona viruses - is an ILI.

Re: “Influenza is not a reportable death.”

What exactly does that mean?

The CDC collects - and publishes - data on influenza every week.

At various points each year, the CDC creates mathematical models from their influenza data, and then publishes their best USA total estimates.

By the way - are you suggesting that the total numbers for COVID-19 have more validity than the influenza numbers?

Sorry - that's ridiculous.

Re: “The entire flu season was estimated to be between 30 - 60 thousand. We’ll pass the 60,000 mark for corona virus in a week or so.”

Only because COVID deaths include EVERY COVID infected person who dies, regardless of ANY other diseases that might be present in the victim.

If we counted influenza deaths the same way, there would be at least 250,000 USA influenza deaths - EVERY year.

The best example of this is pneumonia deaths.

During flu season, influenza “causes” (or “precedes”) at least 40% of pneumonia infections.

However, less than 10% of TOTAL pneumonia deaths are documented as being influenza deaths.

That same counting procedure takes place when influenza infected victims die from heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes.

If you count influenza deaths exactly the same way you count COVID deaths, influenza will be MORE deadly.
