...Consider the three leading causes of preventable deaths in the US: about 480,000 Americans die from smoking (some from secondhand), 300,000 die from obesity, and 88,000 die from alcohol, every single year...Look at it this way: if imprisoning people in their homes for weeks and months on end, destroying countless mom-and-pop stores around the nation, and even arresting fathers who play ball with their daughters in empty parkswhile creating a culture where people are rewarded for reporting on their neighborsare now deemed necessary evils, or the new norm, to save a maximum of 240,000 lives, then surely something as simple and commonsensical as outlawing intrinsically unhealthy and addictive productsor at the very least their aggressive, exploitative advertisementmust be right around the corner. After all, doing so would save millions of American lives each and every yearas opposed to just 240,000 potential lives from COVID-19; and that, of course, is the whole point of the current clampdown, right?....

“preventable deaths in the US: about 480,000 Americans die from smoking...”
This year alone there have been over 255,000 killed by abortion in America. (http://www.numberofabortions.com/)
REPENT America.
Caution is highly advised. I am not trying to be negative but I feel the need to keep some basic facts in front of the Freepers.
My data is sourced from the individual states and posted in Wikipedia. It tracks the numbers I see from other sources.
Here is something to think about:
3/16 - 75 Cumulative Deaths from the Coronavirus.
4/16 - 30,355 Cumulative Deaths from the Coronavirus.
And that is the month we have been under the maximum quarantine. 30,000 U.S. deaths in a single month.
4/16 - 2141 U.S. deaths in a single day and an upward trend.
Over the past 7 dates the average deaths per day is just shy of 2000.
So OK, Infections have peaked. Deaths trail infections by something like 3 weeks. So we should see some improvement in the daily death count by about May 1. Sooner is possible. Another 25,000 deaths is, unfortunately more likely.
I really want to be wrong about this but the data is what it is. If you look worldwide it is worse. But infections are falling faster than I expected. Hopefully deaths will as well.
I appreciate your efforts. But these folks are hysterical and dont really want to hear measured information.
I know that. I just cant help myself.
We can even see disease related hypocrisy.
Let’s close down the economy and socially isolate everyone for a disease similar to the flu in death rate ... but not HIV that killed tens of millions worldwide.
Let’s limit everyone’s travel for the sake of public health for Americans, but not illegal immigrants entering the country who bring diseases from Chagas disease to TB to measles.
Order everyone to be screened for the Wuhan virus to be allowed to work, but don’t require all immigrants to be screened for disease or limited from entering if found ill.
Arrest people for not abiding by social distancing, but knowingly exposing people to HIV is no longer a crime in California.
We can even see disease related hypocrisy.

(Some from second hand). <= that’s where I stopped reading.
Here is what you can do to easily get ahead of all your info sources... Go to your local morgue, any city in the US will do, even NY and Louisiana, and count the corpses. Ask the coroner how many died last year on this date.
Overwhelmingly, there have been fewer deaths this year than last. What happened to the ten thousand bodies from all the people that died of the virus? The 50,000? the two and a half million? Now do you want to believe your own lying eyes or the gold-plated statistics from the poofters on TV? Believe your eyes or the media, but something big is going on and you are being distracted.
Don’t misread me. I support Trump and his plan. We have to get back to normal as fast as possible. I am not arguing for a continuation of the lockdown.
But I am a little tired of hearing that this is just another flu. The flu doesnt kill people at 2000 per day. Cancer does. Heart attacks do as well. But not the flu. And flu infects 100,000,000 people some years. Right now we only have somewhere between 500,000 and 5,000,000 cases. Big difference.
The shutdown saved lives ... for awhile or at least until we have widespread application of a vaccine and treatment. And it saved the hospitals and that saved lives.
So yes it is time to move on. But watch the data for U.S. deaths each day. It needs to decline and fast. At 2000 per day we will have about 3000 more deaths by May 1. That would get us to the number we are hearing for the total deaths. I think the total is going to be higher, possibly much higher.
You have a good argument. I dont actually disagree with you. But the dead we are counting come from a population of at most (IMHO) 5,000,000 people.
30,000 of those people died in the last month. If the virus spreads to 50,000,000 then we could be running at 300,000 per month.
At 30,000 a month you have a tolerable death rate. At 300,000 a month I dont think you do. We would have been overwhelmed. The mortuaries would have been overwhelmed.
Of course projecting what infection and death rates would have been if we just went about business as usual is really not possible. We really dont know. We may never know.
But lastly, you really cant compare deaths per 330,000,000 to deaths per 5,000,000. That is just apples and oranges even when its corpses.
