At least 15,292 people were fatally shot in The United States in 2019, excluding suicides, according to data gathered by Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks shootings. That’s a roughly 3 percent increase over 2018.

One of my daughters lives along and has refused to buy a firearm. Not out of hatred, just doesn’t think she needs one. My son lives 15 miles from her. A few weeks ago, at my request, he showed up at her door with “a friend” and left it with her. She’s shot before but they also made a quick range trip as a refresher.
She called to thank me. I said that I don’t think it will occur, but in case the social order does break down, I needed her to be ready.
