My understanding is that is hard to register as a Republican in CA for some reason. Maybe there are many in CA who are starting to lean Republican and don't want to go through the trouble of re-registering.

"My understanding is that is hard to register as a Republican in CA for some reason."

Except for 3 years in Spain, I've lived my life in CA and never had such a problem or heard of it.

You know in parts of the country they are paying in the low $1s for a gallon of gas. In California it will likely never be under $3.xx a gallon because of the gas tax. Only now, few people are driving, or shopping, or making purchases and the tax may as well be set near zero because it won’t make a difference to the revenue stream.

Just my way of saying, perhaps, people are getting a little tired of having an ineffectual government with a completely bass-akwards view of their responsibilities. CA has a $230 billion state budget and can’t find ways to raise more fast enough. The cities and counties do the same. Only now, they will all be financially broken by the virus. And you just know they are going to come out crying for more taxes, bailouts from taxpayers through the fedgov, and at having to slash their expenditures or go deeper into debt.

I’ll give Newsome a little credit for taking a bold step with the closure orders to save lives, even if some people will see it as heavy handedness or authoritarianism. But the end of this story has yet to be written. I don’t want to politicize disease but a traumatic event like this should cause all Americans to rethink our priorities. We can’t afford to spend and worry about all the small things we have been bombarded with over the recent past and still be prepared to deal with real devastation that is certain to occur in the future. Government across the board got fat and lazy and strayed off their main mission. Mission creep. It is time to roll it back.

So I say, starve the beast. And it’s probably wishful thinking off this little anecdotal story about more GOP registrations - I don’t think most people think this way - but maybe people are waking up from their slumber and seeing how woefully unprepared they were because we allowed ourselves to be distracted while the political and bureaucratic class lavished themselves with praise over their social consciousness.

I'm not expecting miracles here, but a least they might get away from having both candidates on the Nov ballot be Democrats due to the "jungle primary" system.

What do you mean that it is hard to register as a Republican in California?
