Swiss officer and military engineer Nicolas Doxat de Demoret — also referred to as Doxat de Moretz or Doxat von Morez — was beheaded on this date in 1738 for surrendering to a Turkish siege.

It’s hard to realize how “recent” the Turkish invasion of Europe was — lasting to barely a century before the US Declaration of Independence.
A few lost battles in the late 1600s, and Europe would have been a very different place.
It's also odd to think that the Eastern Roman Empire / Byzantine Empire lasted until 1453, just 39 years before Columbus sailed from Spain.
Charles Martell is probably spinning in his grave over what Europe is today.
Today he’d be considered a hero or politician...
