Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now
Medium ^ | 3/10/20 | Tomas Pueyo

With everything that’s happening about the Coronavirus, it might be very hard to make a decision of what to do today. Should you wait for more information? Do something today? What?

Here’s what I’m going to cover in this article, with lots of charts, data and models with plenty of sources:

How many cases of coronavirus will there be in your area? What will happen when these cases materialize? What should you do? When?

When you’re done reading the article, this is what you’ll take away:

The coronavirus is coming to you. It’s coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly. It’s a matter of days. Maybe a week or two. When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed. Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways. Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die. They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies. The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today. That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now.

As a politician, community leader or business leader, you have the power and the responsibility to prevent this.

You might have fears today: What if I overreact? Will people laugh at me? Will they be angry at me? Will I look stupid? Won’t it be better to wait for others to take steps first? Will I hurt the economy too much?

But in 2–4 weeks, when the entire world is in lockdown, when the few precious days of social distancing you will have enabled will have saved lives, people won’t criticize you anymore: They will thank you for making the right decision.

“Dr. Peter Venkman : This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.

Mayor : What do you mean, “biblical”?

Dr. Raymond Stantz : What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath of God type stuff.

Dr. Peter Venkman : Exactly.

Dr. Raymond Stantz : Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!

Dr. Egon Spengler : Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...

Winston Zeddemore : The dead rising from the grave!

Dr. Peter Venkman : Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!”

there may be many more cases already as most cases are mild and not reported. infection rate will go up and fatality rate is already coming down.

the fatality rate is nowhere near as high as some alarmist like this make it out to be. That is why no one, ZERO under the age of 10 has died anywhere in the world.

The country that has done the most testing that can be relied upon is S Korea , they have tested well over 250,000 and have 7,869 cases and 66 deaths for a fatality rate of .008 or less than 1%. That is more than the flu but nothing like what some are reporting here and in the news.

As a matter of fact if you add up the top 15 countries with reported cases excluding China, Italy and Iran ) you get over 20,446 cases and 247 deaths for a fatality rate of .012-about 1%. Probably lower and more in line with S Korea as many cases are even more mild. As more test are done you will see more confirmed cases and death rate dropping as it already has started to do that’s because it is more mild than reported for most people.

I was saying to the people inside the bus, no real need to panic, but they couldn’t really hear me up on the roof there.

See, Mitt Romney was ahead of his time, he was already into this social distancing thing with his dog.

A good opportunity to panic was wasted. Tragic.

I think Tomas appropriated some of those graphs from Michael hockey stick Mann. That is not appropriate.

Thanks for posting, I hadn’t read it.

The main point is to delay the spread of the disease through social isolation. That allows our medical systems to deal with it without overflowing.

Erring on the cautious side seems like a good idea. Unless it’s somehow ok to overwhelm our hospitals and have more people die.

And yeah, I’m one of those people who will probably keep travelling through this mess.

I’ve never seen this much panic before.
People are going nuts (my wife included).

When I got home last night she had piled up food and stuff all over the kitchen.

She bought 40 rolls of TP, 2 dozen paper towels, 6 dozen boxes of ramen, rice, several dozen canned soups, canned vegetables, sugar, flour, 20 pounds of grits, spaghetti sauce, boxes of pasta and a couple dozen canned pot pies. I didn’t even know they made canned pot pies, I though they came frozen.

I guess were all set for the zombie apocalypse now.

I asked her if she bought any powdered milk and she informed me that they stopped making powdered milk 6 or 8 years ago. I checked on Amazon; she’s right. You can’t buy powdered milk; it’s not a thing anymore.

I’ve been posting that this IS going to have dramatic effect on markets eventually, but not well received. Oh well...also told people YEARS ago that illegal immigration was going to be THE issue and was ignored. lolol.

And this on 2-23-2020:

And again... Reactions of governments hiding the truth about the seriousness of this disease have given me all the information I needed. This virus is really bad and China specifically has not come out and directly said so. The illness is far worse in the way it shows symptoms (or doesn't) and infects people.

It is far worse when one is sick with it than they are telling people. And, the mortality rate is worse and HEALTHY people who should be able to weather it are DYING. The coverup is so the very rich can move their assets to safety as much as possible before panic sets in and all hell breaks loose. The record lows on Treasury bond yields (very few understand what that means) and the sharp uptick in the price of gold tell me all I need to know about that. Batten down the hatches. It's going to be a rough ride.

I just got some. It’s in the baking product aisle at my local grocery.

Of course, powdered milk is still made. I keep it in my cupboard just because..

The brand I buy is Nido, made by Nestle.
I buy mine at Walmart.
