Britons, brace yourselves. The scenes I have witnessed unfolding here in Italy could, sooner or later, be coming your way.
Soldiers and policemen patrolling the streets. Food stores with empty shelves and only three people allowed in at a time. Flights cancelled and police checks at railway stations to ensure your travel is absolutely necessary.
Too late, some say. Too much, say others. Whatever your take, as of yesterday, this was the reality for 60 million people living in Italy.

They were sure garlic would keep them safe?
Brick and mortar shut down? No problem! Use Amazon. :)
Have you seen those plague masks people wore back in the day? The beaks were filled with garlic and other aromatics.
Maybe those breaks filled with garlic will ward off Wuhan flu as well as Count Chocula
“Deserted streets. The shops shut. A 6pm curfew. That’s Italy now... so how did they get coronavirus so wrong?”
Easy - Normalcy Bias. Hope you ‘just the flu, bro’ types enjoy using newspaper, rather than toilet paper.
The healthcare system in Italy is a regionally based national health service known as Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN). It provides universal coverage to citizens and residents, with public healthcare largely free of charge. ... Most expats employed in Italy will qualify for the local government healthcare network.
They got it wrong because the Italian authorities didn’t factor in the very large elderly population of that country, for starters. Not to mention the way many Italians greet each other with a lot of physical contact and the fact many older Italians are or were heavy cigarette smokers.
Commentary noted in Italy this morning that in the Lombardy area...death stats are up around 8.2 percent of those who get the infection. It’s about 2 times what Wuhan was averaging and way above the rest of Europe. So there’s some other element to the Italian story. Some Italian reporter was noting in some rural area of Lombardy....they were burying five people a day in the local village over the past week.
Italy is enjoying the benefits of open borders. USA on the other hand live under the dictatorial rule of Trump who too quickly closed borders and isolated us from the Wuhan Flu. We can only enjoy empty shelves at Costco and not empty streets of Italy. Bad Trump
dont they hire a bunch chi-coms to work in Milan ¿?
how did they get coronavirus so wrong?
1) Lefty govt is incompetent by it’s very nature
2) Govt paid health care
3) unvetted, diseased muslims in their midst
4) Rationing of health care.
Live Venice Web Cam, it’s a Ghost Town (Like the music, though)

A number of years ago a friend of mine went to northern Italy to work for Augusta Helicopter and while there his wife delivered a baby in a hospital. A nurse came by and his wife told her there were no towels in the bathroom. The nurse asked, "Didn't you bring your own?" Later, his wife told someone there was no toilet paper in the bathroom. You guessed it: "Didn't you bring your own?" The good news is that his wife and baby were fine.
Yes. Highest Chinese count in the country what with the fashion/textiles industries and probably other jobs too.
Italy has never done pandemics and epidemics well. At least there are no pogroms...
From what I’ve been reading, anyone above the age of 80 with 1 additional health risk in Italy is denied hospitalization. That creates some crazy high numbers....
Back in the Ceaucescu days, a relative ended up needing an emergency operation in Rumania. Romanian hospital supply/logistics was apparently the same model as you describe. This relative commented that the hospital reminded them of a county home in 1930's Iowa.
Lots of Chicoms in Italy and the family unit has seniors living not in senior homes but in family homes with extended family.
It is curious why N Italy has been hit so hard compared to other places in the west, thus far. Certainly a hot spot, but why?
