I agree with you. That is just the position I have held for many years now.

It may be different from state to state but here in CO a “felon” can appeal to the governor to have their rights restored after seven years. IIRC. Make that the case for violent felons and your recommendation for non-violent felons. That should be fair to all including a regard for security for the community.

Most are out in the population for a period of time, on probation.

Except people on probation are not, as Rubin said, finished serving their sentence. Probation is still a 'jail' sentence, you are just not required to be there based on certain conditions. That said, once probation is over and the full sentence has been served and is gone, you are released as a citizen, so you should have all the rights of a citizen. If society cannot trust you to be out in public with a firearm, then how can society trust you in public without one? Voting, firearms, all rights should be automatically restored upon completion of every criminal sentence. Otherwise, you should have gotten a longer sentence.

Not to mention, many felony crimes are violence-free, minor stuff, or stuff that shouldn't even be a felony in the first place. Many prosecutions/crime levels are at the prosecutor's discretion. Why should some people get a felony for doing something, yet someone who did the exact same thing get 50 hours of community service, cause he lucked out on which side of the bed the DA woke up on? A 'compassionate' justice system is just as unfair as a discriminatory one.

I see taking away someone's ability to protect/defend themselves as a really big deal.

It is a very big deal. If it was me that would be eternal punishment. So, when is punishment enough? As Christians we are taught to forgive those who trespass against us, so we may be forgiven. Don't we need to forgive all convicts, particularly if they paid their debt to society? Maybe that's barking up the wrong tree. It just seems continued punishment beyond prison, beyond parole, makes it very difficult for an ex-con to assimilate into society. And it still doesn't stop a motivated ex-con to break the law and steal a gun so he can continue to break the law my committing a violent crime with the stolen gun.

Otherwise, you should have gotten a longer sentence.

I think that just about nailed it for me. Makes no sense for, say, a murderer to get a two year prison sentence and then released to full rights as a citizen. On the other hand, someone who got into a fight, aggravated assault, which is considered violent, gets two years and fully restored rights fits better.

Glad I don’t live there - I’m troubled that they would do this......and my admission probably categorizes me as a ‘troubling person” - nothing many FReepers don’t already know...please don’t turn me in...

If this is a bona-fide unit, they must investigate and respond to any complaints.
Why wouldn’t law abiding citizens of SC county report illegal immigrants suspected of possessing firearms?

My previous posts on this thread dealt with 2A rights and whether they should be restored to reformed citizens and whether there should be barriers to obtaining firearms for law abiding citizens. Adding wetbacks to the discussion conflates the issue. Illegals are illegals and they should be deported, firearms or not. Adding another level of law enforcement experienced in confiscating firearms is a slippery slope. Eventually they will come for law abiding citizen's firearms. The bottom line of the previous discussion is if you did your time, paid your debt to society, then you should have full rights restored as a citizen. Any law that infringes on law abiding citizen's ability to obtain a firearm, e.g., delay, postpone, charge a fee, etc., doesn't stop criminals for obtaining firearms. Lifelong criminals, not the reformed, will break the law to obtain a firearm. We should not give up freedom for safety, particularly when it really doesn't make us safe.

X felons are no longer felons!
(Isn't that what the X indicates?)

If you support the permanent 'taking' of a persons 'right' for self (and sometimes family) protection by the government then You are a part of the problem!

You seem to have no understanding of our constitution?

Instead of me creating a book length post on here,
allow me to point you to a short but very easy to understand tutor on the constitution,
