Midwives are really cool. They have many tools at their disposal and have an intimate knowledge of the people and the process. Many ‘complicated’ births are rendered uncomplicated by the presence of a midwife.

To be a Nurse-Midwife in the US requires

  1. A Master's in Nursing degree (or higher) beyond the BSN level;
  2. Passing the CNM credential from the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME);
  3. Passing the Advanced Practice State Licensure as a Certified Nurse-Midwife;
  4. Maintaining CNM Certification and State Licensure through Continuing Education.
You're right, it's not 1840.
