In that balance sheet he runs in his mind, a little bit of the spite that Mitt Romney has for President Donald J. Trump has just been assuaged. But out here in the real world, Romney did himself no favors, and has burned the brand of shame just a little deeper on his forehead, a mark that shall not go away.

At one time, Mitt Romney, running against Ted Kennedy for Senator from Massachusetts, was taking positions to the LEFT of Ted, a hard position to maintain. Got beat anyway.

So Romney is mostly looking in the rear view mirror rather than focusing on the future [where things are still malleable]?

In the final debate, he was slightly ahead back in 1994, so as you say, he ran to the left of Teddy on abortion and gay rights. He went into freefall and lost on a night Republicans won everywhere.

Next thing you know he’s governor of Mass and a Republican presidential nominee when everybody hates him.
