Bernie Sanders wants to end at-will employment, and that's a truly bad idea that would increase unemployment

...

Sanders' most eyebrow-raising labor market plan is the call to outlaw the American norm of "at-will employment."

Despite US labor-market flexibility delivering much lower unemployment than more heavily regulated countries, Sanders thinks it's time to move toward more onerous employment laws. Getting rid of at-will employment would not only make it much more difficult for inexperienced, young, and risky hires to find work, but it would also reduce wages and living standards.

Doing away with at-will employment means eliminating the presumption that employers should be able to fire workers at any time or for any reason, just as workers are free to walk away from a job if they choose.

Federal protections against termination already exist for discrimination against protected classes. And many states have additional safeguards for workers, such as laws that prevent companies from firing workers if it would breach implied promises to the employee or is a way to punish the employee for complying with public policies.

Yet Sanders' plan goes much further. He wants a national "just cause" law, where the government would dictate what constitutes a fair layoff for personal or economic reasons, with the threat of court action and fines for employers found guilty of "unjust" dismissals.

His stated desire is laudable: improving job security for workers. But security isn't free.

Making it costlier or riskier to fire people also makes it riskier to hire them. Abolishing at-will employment entirely could make firms less likely to take on workers who are young and inexperienced, particularly when their performance is difficult to observe. The risk of such a law, then, is higher unemployment and weaker labor productivity.

Bernie is an evil POS - you can’t be a commie and a good guy at the same time. . . .

I never heard anyone call him a “good guy” he is more like angry Grandpa who talks about the good ole days under the Soviet Union because he got a free block of cheese and a government apartment to live in.

Its just that our youth is so misguided and uneducated even after 4-8 years of college that they think this is a good idea and made this old kook popular enough to run for president.

The left’s answer to every perceived problem is less freedom.

Being able to jump companies without breaking any contract is a freedom I enjoy. And use.

He has an eternal snarl and messy hair.

Except when he was on Cobert. Then he was neat and even smiled. Almost looked like a nice person.

"Almost looked like a nice person."

Stalin liked to be portrayed as a Father to his People, holding children. That didn't stop him from starving millions to death...

I want to see if Bernie would smile on the gallows. This oath he took to "preserve, protect and defend" is apparently meaningless.

I would expect this from Crazie Bernie. He has lived off of the people all his life and never has worked at a job to speak of. He know nothing about employment and neither does his wife. She just knows how to scam a school out of money. The guy is a total loser and the nutburgers from Iowa believe in him.

Yes, his policies would end at-will employment. They would end employment.

The author is correct. Employees are already a toxic commodity that businesses avoid whenever possible, mostly because of government. The last thing we need is to make employees even more undesirable. If anything like what Sanders wants is going to become law, I will terminate all of my employees (currently 14) before it takes effect. He can process their welfare checks.

This would be as tremendous as Stalin’s first five year plan or the Great Leap Forward. The idea of Sander’s plan and the results from it would be nearly the same. Add the New Green Deal to it and the results would actually be the same.

I man who has never ever had a job wants to dictate labor policy. At least Zero had two jobs to fall back on for “private experience”. He ran an ice cream stand where he stole from his employer and gave free ice cream to his pals. after either undergrad or law (I can’t remember which!) he had a job editing an investment newsletter. (He hated it and was only at it a year!) As little as that is, its still more then Bernie!

I was an employer for 40 years. One of my phrases to employees was..your leg is not chained to the ground. If you don’t like it here you can go anytime you want.
