Loosening Social Justice’s Iron Grip on Academia
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | January 6, 2020 | Shannon Watkins

Posted on 01/06/2020 8:37:17 AM PST by karpov

Social justice education—which teaches young people to view the world through the lens of oppression and demands unquestioning conformity—pervades nearly every nook and cranny of higher education: the administration, general education requirements, extracurriculars, university mission statements, and academic departments.

On December 6, the National Association of Scholars (NAS) co-sponsored an event with the Martin Center to introduce a report on the spread of social justice education in the academy. The first speaker was the report author David Randall, the research director at NAS, followed by a talk by Heather Mac Donald, the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute. A panel discussion followed, moderated by John Hood, president of the John William Pope Foundation.

While extensive reporting has covered social justice’s perverse effects in the academy, few have provided as comprehensive a guide as David Randall. In his new report, Social Justice Education in America, Randall catalogs the ways in which social education has “captured” the academy. Randall dives into course curricula, university-sponsored conferences, student orientations, and all the “training” sessions or workshops that students, faculty, and administrators are required to attend.

“Social justice education—compulsive, coercive, and bullying—replaces the academic’s search for truth with the activist’s search for power,” Randall wrote. According to Randall, the words referring to social justice include: diversity, inclusion, equity, multiculturalism, sustainability, and civic engagement.

During his talk, Randall noted that higher education has no easy solutions to rid itself of social justice ideology. Indeed, he said that he “preaches alarmism” and is not optimistic about it ever being rooted out of colleges and universities.

Nevertheless, in the conclusion of his report, Randall offers some recommendations on how to eliminate social justice education.

Make it a capital crime to be an SJW? Maybe include it under the umbrella of treason?

The generations coming up are made to order for this indoctrination nonsense.

This is snowflake food. A ticket to perpetual adolescence and emotionalism.

After this the wholesale violence will start. Similar to a time in Europe in the 30’s involving youth indoctrination.

Its actually the blueprint for this insanity.

William Quantrill, a Confederate guerrilla leader during the American Civil War, was a school teacher before the war. His biggest gripe with the school systems in the country was that they forced unquestioning conformity upon the students at the expense of a classical standard education that included math, science, geography, history and civics.

This crap has been going on for 160 years or more.

You can only loosen leftist-agenda’s grip on academia by defunding it. 1) Quit sending kids to pursue meaningless, unemployable diplomas; and 2) defund demonstrably false lines of inquiry and their senseless conclusions.

Huh? I thought that the deepest urge in human nature was to correct what someone else has written.

When my kid started college, I learned that those in the STEM fields were now required to take some Social Justice type classes in order to graduate.

I guess they figured that students in STEM coursed of study are not getting the minimum daily allowance of indoctrination, so they make it a requirement.

So, enrolling in STEM course of study does not mean the study will be safe from exposure to social justice apparatchiks...umm...I mean professors.

Oh and yes...the university in question is in California.

If universities didn’t make it a requirement, no one would take the SJW courses. Everyone normal knows the SJW courses are a bad joke! What’s driving these things are the “diversity administrator” hires that colleges & universities have been allowed to do. For state schools “governing bodies” (Board of Regents\Visitors, etc.), state legislatures, & alumni association have all been cowed into allowing this by playing SJW activists playing the “race\oppression card”. These organizations need to grow a spine & hold college\university presidents feet to the fire over it.

Dewey’s comment that “The deepest urge in human nature is the desire to feel important” is ironically what drove his life, drives most academics, AND what makes them generally so oblivious to the truth. There is no more severe of a hierarchy, less of a democracy, or less of a meritocracy than academics. The hubris of any individual person to think that their little ~3 pound brain gives them the capacity to comprehend all and to dismiss the possibility of a greater intelligence or a creator is actually irrefutable evidence of their limited ability to understand.

If being an idiot were a capital offense entire cities in America would stand vacant. Not really sure how you would define an SJW in legal terms or how you could link it to treason.

Yeah, the definition is tricky. Treason in that it’s hijacking proper operation of the country.

The problem with defining treason as “hijacking proper operation of this country” is that from the leftist POV legal gun owners and anyone who puts up a fuss about trannies sharing a restroom or locker room with biological women is “hijacking proper operation of this country”.

Academia has brainwashed the next generation, planned and executed against America. Just one piece of the puzzle of a larger picture in destroying America from within

Well, they're wrong. Here's how you determine that. The conservatives' view of guns is how the founders viewed guns. How conservatives view today's bathroom debacle is how the founders would have view it, had they ever contemplated such an ludicrous situation. Therefore our definition of hijacking prevails. THEY'RE the ones proposing a new definition without obtaining our buy-in and trying to view it as legit and enforce it upon everyone, even though we and our opinion were here first. You don't get to move in next to the airport then sue them over the same noise levels that were there when you bought the house.
