How lucky. To know the unvarnished love of a creature who wants nothing more than a little reciprocation.

Reminds me of my ten year old Great Dane, who’s still very much alive. It’s going to rip my guts out when he dies.

About 5 years ago our older horse(PB) ran out of the barn as usual. He fell down and didn't get up. At first we thought he was just going to roll around like he usually does. He didn't. His younger "step- brother" ( Bentley) was out in the field and ran to see what was wrong. He was upset. He started to lick PB's hip. When that didn't work , he grabbed PB's tail and tried to pull PB up. I lost it, then. Sobbed.

That's why I say sometimes animals are more caring than some people.

A horse named Boston was the best. I understood him and he understood me.

All of my horses will do the same to me and my wife. The problem is we are usually in their pens to clean up and they want to be there with you but they just get in our way. I always take the time to acknowledge their need to be touched but then shoo them away.

I’ve comforted my share of dying horses to let them know they were loved.

It’s wonderful to hear he’s still here at ten years. You have obviously taken excellent care of him.

They are. I have read of times where a horse stood by his dead owner until the horse was almost ready to die by the time they were found. Horses are very emotional creatures.
